Renn disk (2)

Is a Renn disc as good as a HED? I want a clincher, so am thinking of the Renn but don’t want to compromise aerodyamics.

Very short answer is YES. You won’t “feel” the difference between a HED and a RENN (only in your pocketbook). And Frank’s customer service is unparalled. Can’t go wrong, as I’m sure others will chime in shortly. Good luck.

You know how I deduced the answer to this question? Well for me at least, I purchased a used Zipp disc from one of the forum members for use on my TT bike and at the next monthly club TT, I rode the Zipp and my wife rode the Renn after which, having never ridden a disc wheel before, despite a better time than the previous month, she complained that the noise of the disc has made it seem like she was dragging a ‘rickshaw’. The following month, I let her ride the Zipp and I rode the Renn and although both of our times improved, she still complained about the disc but added that at least the Zipp seemed to be a quieter rickshaw (grin)!

I have a Renn - great disc - great price - unbelievable Customer Service

Your wife should try the HED disc. Because of its lenticular shape it makes no noise. Very nice.

Never understood until now why my CH Aero makes no noise - it’s also lenticular. To my understanding, aren’t lenticular discs supposedly slightly quicker.

Yes, I have seen data favoring the lenticular shape. But I’ve also seen data favoring the flat disc. The results were based on the airflow interaction with the frame type - beam vs standard rear triangle. Ultimately the time saving difference is so miniscule that it comes down to your personal preference regarding the sound. Some are annoyed by it. Others enjoy it.

I agree - do you have one you could give us to try out for the next 6-7 months? <(:^D

I have ridden both, borrowed a hed clincher and I own a Renn. Regarding the aerodynamics, I am not engineer so I am not qualified to say, but i could not tell the difference. Regarding quality the Renn hub seems superior to me.

Regarding customer service, I have never had better customer in anything, I mean anything I have ever purchased from cars, boat, clothes, cervelo, jewelry, nordstroms… Then the service I have received from Renn. Even after the stated warranty Frank has exceeded any expections.

Buy the Renn you will not be disappointed and you will save some coin as well!

Good Luck,

RF

Lots of nods to the Renn already, I see. I don’t believe anyone has mentioned weight, but the nod there goes to Renn as well. I think a Renn 575 is actually lighter than what HED calls their “Superlight.” Don’t quote me on that, though. Don’t have the data in front of me.

575 Renn: 1200g (Clincher) and 1120g (Tubular) $450 http://rennmultisport.com/technical/technical.shtml

Hed Superlight: 1270g (Clincher) and 1220g (Tubular) $695 http://www.hedcycling.com/wheels/superlitedisc.php (The regular Hed is 1400g/1345g, resepctively)

I’m looking to get a disc. Hell! I like that jet aircraft noise.
I borrowed one once for a test ride. It took me a minute to figure out why that damned ‘jet’ wouldn’t pass me. slow jet.

a great alternative
