I gave my tubulars to be re-glued at my LBS using regular glue (I used the Tufo tape in the first place). The LBS is telling me that we cannot remove the tape from the tire itself.
Anybody experienced that ? I hate to have to buy new tires just for that.
Tufo tape is some sticky stuff! I used it the first time I got tubulars and then decided to go to Conti glue since I thought the tires weren’t on quite straight anyway. The mechanic at the LBS suggested I just put on 5 or 6 pieces of tape around the rim or I wouldn’t be able to get the tire off during a race. Good thing it wasn’t all around the rim. I had sore tumbs for six months from picking that stuff off of the tires and rims! I used about a quart of acetone on the rims and still didn’t get all the gunk off. It started to rip the cloth on the tires (Tufo S3 Lite) so I really had to be careful but I finally got enough of it off to where I thought it was ok to put on the glue. Trying to pay somebody else to do that is a good move but I don’t blame the bike shop for taking a pass on that chore.
I tried the Tufo tape and that was the reason I stopped using it. I never could get the crap off the tires. It came off the carbon rims clean enough but the tires were another matter altogether. I gave up trying and went back to glue since I didn’t want to have to carry more tape to mount the spare if I got an unsealable flat.
I have to admit for absolute holding power the tufo tape is better on carbon rims, though you would have to be doing very radical stuff for it to ever matter.

I was told otherwise by two guys at Zipp, 3 LBS. The all very highly recommended to use glue instead of the tufo tape.
