What’s the trick?
Something I learned. Water, soap, soak, and rub off as much as you can. Then a little rubbing alcohol to remove the glue residue.
Don't use that sticky stuff to begin with. I hate those sticky numbers. Bring a stapler with you or use safety pins and staple or pin the number around your seatpost. If you already have it stuck, you're screwed, it'll ever come off!
Nail polish remover. Unless your bike was painted with Loreal…kj
Never tried it but I heard that smearing a little peanut butter on the residue will free it up. Supposdly the oil in the PB will overpower the adhesive after a little while.
Another idea for later…slice the paper backing off just the two ends of the race number so it can fold over the bike tubing and ONLY stick to itself. Make sense?

goof off!
I always bring index cards with me and stick the number on the index card and then use my three hole punch and then affix to my bike.
God, I just sounded like a geek.
WD-40. But don’t use it as a bike lube.
After peeling off the back, I tear the backing material into a smaller size and stick it back on the number. This leaves just a small edge of adhesive around the edges to stick to the bike. Always comes off clean. I never stick it to a painted area, usually the seat post.
I just bought a used bike and had to remove some team decals. Regular citrus degreaser seemed to work better than nail polish remover. FWIW.
Kerosene or diesel fuel. Just don’t light your Lucky while you do it.
Goo-gone, works brilliantly
