Remember when I promised to announce an upcoming epic PC ride?

I also think I said it should impress pretty much every PowerCranker that ever tried to get to 100 miles on them.

Daniel Kerr will be riding from Kabul to Melbourne on a very small base.

He has promised to keep a blog of his adventures (and this should be an adventure) on the web site, although the most amazing part of this trip may be finding internet access along the way. Enjoy.

Good luck to Daniel.

This is epic. The guy is going to riding in the same area that Alexander the Great used when he tried to conquor India:

pasted from his blog:

“I am currently based in Kabul so have decided I will head off from there with the first month of the trip being a ride north over the Hindu Kush and in to Tajikistan, along the Pamir Highway, through part of Kyrgyzstan on to Kashgara in Western China. From there I may take a short break and long train ride to organise some visa’s in Hong Kong before returning and heading south east on bike. Specific routes from there are a little hazy but I hope to cross in to Laos a few months later and then Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Or something like that.”

Two passes that I have always wanted to ride are the Khyber Pass and the karakoram highway from Pakistan over the Pamirs to China. That would be ultra cool. Safe travels to him…can’t believe the dude is doing it on PC’s!

More cool stuff:

“The Salang Tunnel, at 3300m, is one of the highest tunnels in the world and will require me climbing 1500, from Kabul. I hope to stay part way up on my first day in order not to blow a valve too early in the trip”

Damn, that is tough. Right up there with the Paulo bike clinic on PCs tough! Good luck to him!

He might want start growing a beard not that it will really help him blend in whilst riding a bike probably a 100 yrs newer than everything in this friggin country. Sounds cool in theory - riding thru areas Alexander the great rode thru. that doesn’t mean i’m in any rush to get down to Lash Kaghar to see the ruins of his castle. The whole land mine and random dudes that would rather shoot you than give you the time of day can put a wee bit of a damper on things sometimes.

Plus I don’t think pashtunwali is going to apply even if he is on PCs…

Currently chilling and content to ride the CT with my PCs at Bagram north of Kabul

I think before I said it was somewhere between RAAM on PC’s and Paulo bike clinic on PC’s. As I read his description of the course (he neglected to comment on the state of the roads but I doubt they will be great) and the state of his PC base this may be even harder than either of those.

I’m thinking that this dude knows what he is getting into. The guy has been clearing land mines in Afghanistan for a living and is likely comfortable in the local environment. Perhaps he even speaks enough Pashtun etc to get by. In any event, sitting in the comfort of North America, things always appear to be more dangerous than they are likely due to the rather biased reporting on CNN and BBC news (despite their relative accuracy and non sensational coverage).

Honestly, no, I don’t remember.

You are clearly not taking these PowerCranks threads (or, at least, my posts) seriously enough.
