HI,
I am traveling there for a family vacation. I want to get some training in.
I was wondering:
1 - Masters swim practice/ pool I can get a workout in?
2 - Best place to ride? A place to rent a road bike?
3 - Best Open Water Swim options? Any organized OWS swim options?
All info appreciated.
I grew up just north of there. Flat and usually windy riding. Seems like I always see people riding up and down route 1, should be many miles of lightly traveled roads if you head in land.
Can’t help with the rest.
There is a YMCA located in town. You can purchase a guest pass and use the facility for the day. I don’t know about masters but you can definitely get a workout in.
There are lots of rental places but most of the bikes hybrids or hard tail mountain bikes. This place appears to rent road bikes: https://fenwick.bike/, but you’d have to call around Rehoboth to see if any of the local shops do.
The riding is pretty lame in my opinion, You can ride from Rehoboth to Fenwick and back on route 1, which is about 40 miles. The shoulders are wide and it’s not particularly congested, but I find it monotonous. Maybe I’ve done it too many times. The wind can be pretty rough also. Many times I’ve done 21 MPH out but 14 MPH back. I wouldn’t go much past Fenwick as Ocean City is a mess traffic wise. You can also cut inland after Fenwick on RT54 then work your way back to Rehoboth on back roads, through Millsboro and take 24 back to route 1. You do have to contend with heavy traffic on Route 1 for the return to Rehoboth, but it’s probably only a mile or two. I’d say that can approach a 60 mile loop.
For an open water swim, lifeguards are on duty from around 10-6. Tell them you are going to do a swim and they will alert the other guards and attempt to keep an eye on you (you should tell them regardless of whether you want to be watched or not). You only have to go a short distance out to clear the jetty’s and you can parallel the shore. End to end its about a mile. There is a group that does an open water swim in the evening but I have no idea who or how it’s organized.
Let me know if you need additional info.

When I did the Dewey Beach tri back in 2008 or 2009, I believe the local Y was closely involved with the race organizer - might be worth contacting the Y to see if they have any info on the local scene. Rehoboth Beach Running Co. https://www.runrb.com/ may be another good resource.
