Regular eggbeaters...do you give up much not having a platform?

I’ve been running the standard no-platform Crank Bros. Eggbeaters on my road bike using Sidi Dominator mtb shoes. I’m getting my first tri bike soon and am planning on sticking with the eggbeaters, but am wondering if there’s really a functional difference between the standards, the candys, the quattro’s etc? Aside from the ease of having a platform when you’re not clipped in, doesn’t the actual cleat interface mean that not much leverage is delivered to the platform? Are the soles effectively stiff enough? If the non-platformed pedals are light and cheap, why buy the Quattros? Performance-wise, how much is lost?

I don’t know why, exactly, one would buy the Quattros either, that’s why I don’t stock them. I think for many the original eggbeater platform just looks scary, and can spin under panic entries, which is why the candys and quattros may exist. I use the original eggbeaters on my fixie, which I ride a lot of winter miles on – but I use carbon-soled shoes – which do a better job of dispersing the load than Sidi plastic soles. I’ve had clients complain of hotspots with the originial eggbeater/Sidi combo on big rides, but this is quite individual.

I own the LOOK eggbeaters called the 4x4’s & LOOK KEO’s.

The 4x4’s I use on my winter/cross bike & the KEO’s on my road & tri bike.

I can’t appreciate the difference other than the 4x4’s are easier to get out of & that you can’t adjust the release tension.

I have both candy and eggbeaters
I like the biger platform (Candys)on the fixed gear bike and mt bike.
no hot spot trouble
