Regretting your alma mater

Has anyone ever regretted the college you attended? I went to a division 1 school in the middle of Illinois that didn’t have a football team, a crappy basketball team and nothing else to be a proud about(go ahead and guess which one). I decided to go because I was going to tryout for the baseball team, it was close to home and had a good academic program. Looking back, I think I would have done more and had more pride/enjoyed the experience had I looked to schools that I am interested in now.

Anyways, with that, has anyone ever regretted attending your college alma mater and likes to cheer for another school? I just don’t think you are allowed to cheer for another school when you haven’t graduated from there but I know a lot of people will disagree with that one. It just leaves me in a gray area when my college is always on a bye week for football. I would like to go to say Ohio State and get an MBA where I graduate and feel good about the MBA and having a newly acquired alma mater. Unfortunately, a few things stand in my way. Anyways…

Cheer for whoever you want.

Although I like sportsing, I didn’t say I was Maurice Clarett.

Reminds when a friend of mine got a football scholarship to a big football school. The first thing the coach said to him was “here’s your courses, they won’t interfere with football”. Second thing coach said was “if you have any problems with any of your profs come talk to me and I’ll straighten them out”.

Nope. And I went to three.

The Canadian university I went to (undergrad) probably has a football, basketball, and hockey teams but neither I nor most of the other students could care less about them. We did have a number of Nobel prize winners as faculty and former students, a healthy number of Rhodes scholars, and a generally accepted high standard of education. So no, I never regretted a thing.

I went to Iowa where football was a bit of a religion and I can tell you as I get older I become more interested in what the rest of the school is doing. Of course I still follow sports, but not as diligently as I used to and I am always fearful of sports tarnishing the brand, ie: Sandusky

I would like to go to say Ohio State

If you go there, you need to learn it is The Ohio State University.

Having went there as an undergrad, it was fun, but I have little interest in sports that I don’t play. Now when people hear I am from OSU, they assume I am all interested in how the team is doing. Most of them know more about how OSU is doing in football than I do. I was much more interested in the school’s reputation in the academic areas. Fortunately that was also good. I have worked at locations 500 -1100 miles from Columbus, people do not run into OSU grads everyday and they generally have a high opinion of those that have come before me. I think if you stay in Ohio, you are just one of thousands so you do not get that positive reaction.

My Grad School days were at Oklahoma State and while it is a sports school, no one ever asks me about how the team is doing. I do not think many grad students get as involved in the sports activities so you do not develop that emotional loyalty you might develop as an undergrad.

Actually it is…“Thee” and I know!

Ditto, except I went to four. I began my undergrad at UCLA; what I do get embarrassed about is fans being more concerned about USC losing than pretty much anything else (including UCLA winning). I don’t get the rivalry thing, since I moved out of California I root for USC unless they are playing UCLA, and I played for UCLA. The 2nd school I played for (Cal Poly SLO), well, they aren’t ever on TV so I can’t really watch and root for them anyways. Root for whoever you want, 90% of CFB fans did not go to the school they root for.

I became a big fan of my college teams when I went to college. We won a national championship in basketball. I followed the program for years afterwards. Now my buddy sends me the college sports magazine. I throw it out. I barely follow them at all. Love the ones you’re with.

Regret? No. Think about how it would have been like going to another school? Yes.

I went to a small (2,200 enrollment) D1 school. At the time we had a crappy basketball team, no football and I ran for a terrible xc team. I do wonder what it would have been like if i went to a bigger school. I probably wouldnt have been able to run in college and would have picked up different hobbies that small schools cant offer.

I do think its more exciting when your school does have a big sports year and you do feel proud. To me, when Duke makes the tourny…eh when my small school made it 3-4 years ago, emails were flying on getting the college crew back together for a road trip, productivity stops when your school is playing, and if they make it beyond the first two rounds everyone in your basketball pool hates you.

I am pretty sure I went to the same school in the middle of Illinois that sucks at sports as you. I went there for the engineering school and athletics didn’t enter in my mind at all. It does suck having bad football and basketball teams because I love college sports, but I am also grew up a Louisville fan so I get to cheer for them. We have had good years here and there in both sports. I was at the Rose Bowl game in 08 and who can forget the 05 basketball season. We might suck at sports but Illinois has tons to be proud of. Did you see this article about tech visionaries that went to Illinois. I am super proud of that. I am proud that I worked at NCSA where Marc Andreessen helped create Mosaic which paved the way for modern web browsers.

No regrets. We were NCAA horse polo champions.

I wasn’t much of a college sports fan before college, but the older I get the more I shift from a pro sports fan to a college fan. My alma mater has very solid football and basketball programs right now, which may have something to do with it. I know in the big scheme of things it doesn’t matter much but I really enjoy following the teams and that’s a lot easier to do when they are ranked all the time.

Bradley?

I only follow the sports from my alma mater in which I had a personal interest: I was on the track team, and I was good friends with a co-captain of the wrestling team. It doesn’t hurt that the current track team has been doing outstandingly well, and the wrestling team has won the Ivy League title a silly twelve years in a row.

I went to a similar school as yours (although there were several years we had a decent basketball team). I walked on to the swim team and it was the best decision I made. I guess it helps that I couldn’t care less about any college sports these days, including basketball, football or swimming, so I’m cheering for no one in that arena.

However, when I look back on my alma mater, I am kinda proud because I believe that the University gave me a great education and has allowed me to be a leader at what I do. I had a friend, nerd-type guy, who was a similar major at a significantly more prestigious university. I visited him on campus and thought it would be a hoot to go to a few of his classes (again, nerd-type behavior). That’s when I learned that my college was teaching the same material as one of the top universities in the nation, and I knew stuff ahead of them. Ha. The pride I had in my school went up.

Now, I’m of the opinion that if you regret your college because your alma mater’s sports teams suck, you probably are looking at college through the wrong lens.
