Regluing a Tubular

I unexpectedly will be using a set of tubular 404’s in a 1/2 IM this coming weekend. As I prepped the bike, I pushed a bit on the deflated tire and noticed separation between the tire and the rim in some spots (not all the way to the other side). This pretty much means I need to re-glue the tire, correct? They were first glued about 20 months ago.

Thanks!

If there are just a few spots that you can easily push back I’d just add fresh glue - hold the tire back and use a toothpick to deliver a small glob of glue to the area and press down. When done with the wheel inflate to a high pressure, push down on the top of the tire as you walk the wheel on the floor for one revolution (or go for a ride around the block), and let stand for ~ 1 day before using. If a lot of the glue bond seems questionable it’s probably easier to pull the tire off and reglue. Put a mark on the rim and tire and reinstall the tire with the marks aligned - that way any globs of glue on the basetape will align with the anti-globs on the rim. I’d use only one coat on the rim and one coat on the basetape - the solvents in the new coats of glue will reactivate the existing glue. If the existing glue looks crystallized and really dried out use an additional coat on the rim. The question of mixing glues comes up all the time - I don’t know for sure but I think it should be OK to mix - the one mechanic that I know has done it with no bad consequences.

FWIW I’ve used different types of glue to re-glue an old tire and haven’t had problems. N of 1 YMMV.

put a coat of glue on the rim and it will soften up the glue underneath then after a little while remount the tire with the glue still a tad tacky, it will be rock solid for another 20 months.

If you go through a lot of glue or have a few friends who ride tubular here is a great deal on Mastik One. I confirmed from the seller that the price is indeed for 24 tubes although I haven’t received the goods yet.
