Recovery From Broken Ankle

I broke my ankle about 6 months ago ,it required 2 pins & a plate .

The recovery has gone quite well , I can walk on it with no pain now and have been doing spin classes and loads of swimming with no dramas.

Running however is an entirely different matter , in fact its impossible , as soon as I stepoff to run I get intense pain plus their seems to be no flexibility.

I have seen 2 physios and they are both confident it should come back to me , so maybe I’m being a bit impatient .

Has anyone here had a similar experience and how did the recovery go ?

Cheers

I have a severe sprain (self diagnosed) right now. Happened playing basketball with co-workers. I have no pain but it is ugly, swollen and purple. Your post makes me nervous when I have IM AZ in 23 weeks. I guess no more basketball for a long while.

With an injury that severe getting back to running will require a very carefully structured progressive loading program. You would be best to start in the water. If you can find one in your area, look for a PT clinic that has both an underwater treadmill and body-weight supported treadmill training system. This system involves a harness on your body with a pneumatic or spring loaded assisst this will allow the optimal transition from water based to land-based activity without overstressing the joint and leading chronic inflamation and pain. You wil have to very very patient with this.

Good luck.

Don’t forget your proprioceptive stuff. Get a wobble board. Do your stork stands, then incorporate movement with it. TRy running in the shallow end of a pool, if you don’t have access to an underwater treadmill.

You may hae more success running in an Air CASt Stirrup. It fits inside your shoes.

I don’t have any help or experience to offer… just wanted to say that I hope you can run pain-free soon

One thought - what about trying some XC skiing? Not running, but involves some foot flexion - you said you had some flexibility issues.
