What do you drink as a recovery after your workouts? I’ve been racing for 14 years and never used a recovery drink. I’m always tired (I’m old) and I figure I need to start using a recovery drink. I workout everyday, I’m an Innkeeper and have lots of time to train. I don’t think its over training but I need to try a recovery drink. Thanks for your help!
Paul,
What works best for me is 12 oz. water, 2 scoops of Endurox R4 (Punch flavor), and 12 oz. Organic Pure Pineapple Juice mixed in a 32 oz. container so there’s room to shake it all up. I’m hardly ever sore even after hard interval workouts using this recovery mix. The Pinapple juice is high-glycemic and the pulp added to the Endurox gives the drink a good consistency and great flavor. Drink this within 15 minutes after your workout. This is the best time for maximum absorbtion and restoration of carbohydrates. I also eat a protein bar during this time as well. Usually a Powerbar Protein Plus bar. I can’t imagine doing a hard workout without Endurox R4. Oh, and when I do run out of Endurox R4 and do a hard workout, I definitely “feel it” more the next day. So I know it works for me. Give it a shot.
I love Endurox also. Sometimes though I drink skim milk w/ nestle’s chocolate mix. Has protein and sugar w/ vitamins, not too far off Endurox. But don’t drink that unless you can handle milk. Rumour has it the Kenyan Runners drink something similar. I understand they drink milk w/ some sugars added after long runs.
Chocolate milk. It has the 4/1 ratio that the name brand stuff has. Use 1% milk and mix Nesquick or syrup according to the directions on the container. 200-250 calories per measured cup. MUCH cheaper, and MUCH tastier than the high priced supplement options. Don’t take my word for it, though. There’s a whole host of nutritionists who know about endurance sports training and recovery who agree. . .
Unless of course you are lactose intolerant. . .in that case. . .well. . .Endurox or SmartFuel are good options.
I loved Endurox. The new fruit punch flavor makes me gag. I have to find a new recovery drink. I dont use milk products. Help!
for the lactose intolerant, just replace the milk with soy milk.
Not lactose intolerant. Are you suggesting chocolate soy milk?
actually, I was referring to TriBriguy’s post. His recovery drink would work with soy milk for those who don’t like or can’t use cow’s milk. My recovery drink of choice is a scoop of chocolate whey protein, a cup of soy milk, and a GU. But I only use that after the hardest workouts. Generally, when I finish I have a glass of gatorade, and some low/non fat cottage cheese.
Or, rice “milk” instead of soy…
I’m lactose intolerant. My typical post-workout “recovery” snack consists of:
-
Tall glass of 8th Continent Chocolate Soy Milk
-
2 Eggs (or Tuna)
-
Water
-
Stretching
While the “convenience” of some sports drinks may be attractive, I find the above process to take less than 3 minutes to prepare (I microwave my eggs) and costs infinitely less. However, I don’t do it for the money, I do it because it works.

Endurox WORKS. Fruit Punch was the only way to go for me, but the new “improved” flavor??? WHY?!
I also noticed that the new flavor has less magnesium and sodium, and no mention of arginine–did they take that out?
Anyway, i’ll keep drinking it because there is a noticable difference in recovery and quality of subsequent workouts. This stuff is great.

Endurox for me - but I agree on the flavor change for Fruit Punch - nasty!!!
How can we get them to change it back???
Add the Pineapple juice to it!
