Record/Open Pro's from Performance?

I am looking at getting a general purpose set of wheel. Anyone have experience with built wheels from Performance Bike? The specs seem good (DT double butted, brass nipple) and suited to a “last forever” set of wheels but I have no idea of who actually builds these. $300US seems like a good price for the set.

"Campagnolo Record 10 hubs with Mavic Open Pro Silver rims. Rims are 32 hole. DT Swiss 14/15/14 gauge double butted spokes with brass nipples. 3 cross lacing. 130mm rear axle spacing. Includes skewers. "

Performance’s wheels are generally machine-built – meaning that they’re laced and initially tensioned by a machine that cranks out wheels very quickly. The final tension and truing is done by hand (I believe). I’ve had a couple sets of Performance wheels for quite a long time (10+ years), and they remain very maintenance-free to this day. I’d say you really couldn’t go wrong there.

I actually just ordered a pair of the Open Pro CD/Ultegra from Performance. Haven’t gotten them yet since they’re on backorder for another month, but everything I’ve read says they’re a good, solid, strong wheel. I can’t wait to get mine.

Any idea how much a set weighs?

I saw one site that said about 1550g (w/o skewers I assume, Campy QR’s tend to be heavy).

Well, Open Pro’s are a pretty known quantity, as are the hubs. I’d guess they’re built with 14/15 double butted spokes and brass nipples. Just add it up. Don’t know off the top of my head what they are, but after a certain point, who cares? They’re good, solid components with good reputations, and they’ll last you a long time.

The build is crap - I am not sure they ever see a human hand, but the price is unreal.

You can buy them, then take them to a shop for tensioning and truing, and still come out ahead.

If they are only $300.00 I am ordering a set too…

Is that from personal experience?

I know a good shop here that could retension then if required. I’ll probably get him to chech the dish and make sure they are true.

I ordered a pair of Open Pros a few years ago and didn’t have any problems. The wheels were perfect. Also got a pair of bomb-proof tubies from them as well.

A wrench that I know used to work at Performance - he suggested it.

I went ahead with the order. And a set of Fortezza SE (?) as well. They were $25 a piece. Interesting to see if they are the same as the normal Vred. Fortezza’s that are generally well regarded. The guy at the tech line said they are the same - just a blue color specific to them.
