Recommended Finger Splint/Tape for Swimming

I tried to search on here but didn’t find much and the search function on this site isn’t the greatest to begin with.

But, I jammed 2 fingers on my left hand and 1 finger on my right hand yesterday playing in my rec league football game. The left hand fingers (pinkie & ring) are a little sore but I can probably deal with it for swimming as I still have a full range of motion on those with only minor discomfort. The right however (pinkie only) is pretty bad, very swollen and limited range of movement for now (does not seem to be dislocated) and is black/blue on the palm side on the 2 joints on the finger itself. There is the possibility it is broken but I haven’t had it x-ray’d yet or gone to the doctor. I might have to give it a week or so to heal some more before even attempting to swim just to err on the cautious side but when I do return to swimming I expect it to be sore. This is the same pinkie I had a similar injury in the same activity a couple of years ago and it took be 2 years before I was even willing to crack it (I crack my knuckles/fingers frequently out of habit).

Anybody have suggestions on a good splint and sports tape that will stand up to the pool? I seen one comment on using Vet Rap (or something similar) but also wanted to see if the waterproof stuff is recommended from experience. I will be buying a large roll of some stuff just in case as next week we hopefully will make the playoffs for football and I’ll be taping both pinkies to my ring fingers on each hand.

I have used duct tape to tape my pinkie to my ring finger. Worked OK in open water, don’t know if the pool would make a difference. Didn’t do a splint.

My first piece of advice would be to see a doctor to get it checked out.

I dislocated & fractured a finger on my right hand a week before a race back in 2009. My doctor (also a triathlete doing the same race) just had me buddy-tape it to the next finger with white medical tape before the race. It really didn’t bother me too much but did make it a bit awkward to work the bike shifter.

Good luck, hope it’s not too bad and you heal fast.

electrical tape holds up in water…cant speak on the splint concept…

This is good advice.
Only thing I can add is to use a swim paddle when you return to the pool, it’ll lessen the stress on the finger
