I am considering waterproof headphones and ipod case for lap pool swimming. Any suggestions?
I use H2O Audio…works great.

My suggestion is not to wear them at all because they are just another distraction from your focus on the actual act of swimming. You already have the goggles that most people are already fooling with every 100, and the headphones just double this, not to mention all the accessories like paddles, pull buoy, fins, snorkel, ankle band, etc. I think you’ll have the most success if you stick to the basics: goggles, pull buoy, and kick board. Focus on the feel of the water flowing around your body, your arms, your legs; focus on your time for each 100 - was it faster or slower than the last one; focus on when you leave for your next 100, i.e. if you come in at 1:40 and you’re doing 100s on the 1:50, then each 100 will leave on a diff number, e.g. first 100 leaving “on the top”, i.e., the 60, then 50, 40, 30, etc, then #7 on the 60 again - you have to really focus to keep up with this!!! IF you can focus on all these things, you will no longer find it boring. I guarantee you Phelps was not bored out his mind swimming 25 to 30 hr/wk, 52 wk/yr for the 5 yrs leading up to 2008 because, if he had been been really bored, no way he would have improved the way he did and done the times he did.

Blasphemy
The key thing is to seal all water out of the ear canal; if any leaks in the sound stops.
You can use H2O Audio or less expensive ones ( ex. http://www.swimoutlet.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=32815&Click=310393&subscribe=Y&gclid=COjM27Oo-rsCFeU1QgodHScAdQ#color=10890)
I use these TYR earplugs in place of the regular tips. They seal well, and still let the sound through.

As far as a music source, I highly recommend one of the waterproofed shuffles (Swimman, WaterFi, etc.). Expensive, but last forever (had mine since '06) and keep the small form factor (plus you never have to worry about sweat killing it).
Don’t mess with the cases…get a waterproof iPod.
Comes with headphones. Had mine for 2 years now…works great.

Hi,
Prob not the advice you want, but my advice is like a couple of other guys here - dont’ wear headphones if you realy want to train. If you’re swimming for therapy or stress release or something like that then I can understand but if you’re swimming to train, they wll just get in the way. Too much else to think about and you’ll be working too hard to enjoy music. If you’re not swimming that hard…you’re not really training. I love music and listen as much as I can - but never while swimming, biking or running.

2nd vote for waterfi, love mine as I find swimming very boring. Assuming you wear a cap then you shouldn’t have any issues with the earphones staying in. Clips onto the back of my cap very unobtrusively.
Cheers, Rich
+1
Used my new Audio Flood iPod shuffle for the first time past week. Worked awesome, had a great workout which seamed to go by a lot more quickly.
It’s not really headphones, but I use the Finis Neptune swimp3 player and it’s taken the bordem out of swimming. It’s expensive, but I’ve really enjoyed the design and not having anything inside my ears while swimming gives me a little piece of mind.
I use the H20 Audio now, I like them but don’t love them. Sometimes plugs fall out of ear then sound quality starts to go downhill

Well, that makes 3 of us: you, me, and stringcheese, vs 7 votes for headphones. Given that swimmers only make up about 10% of ST at most, eventually we’ll be further out-voted. But that’s OK since we know we’re right:)
I will say though that when swimming hard I often have a fast, hard song playing on my internal soundtrack, and that’s all I need, no wires or anything to deal with:)
Why do you want to disassociate from your workout?
Train like you race. You can’t race with music. Why do it in training?
Because swimming is boring for those of us who are not fishes. If you are doing 100’s I can understand that music would get in the way. but if you are just putting in the yards to build endurance, music is a nice distraction from the boredom of lap after lap after lap. I guess you dont listen to music or watch Netflix while on the bike trainer to disassociate from the boredom and pain? Or listen to an Ipod on long runs? Great for you. For the OP who asked for advice on headphones and not a lecture on swim training - X3 on the waterfi.com
Audio Flood works well but the cord for the headphones is a bit short. Truth be told I’ve only had this product for 2 weeks but it works great so far.
I’d advise you to stay away from H20 Audio (now X-1). I have had two of their cases and they work well for about 6 months and then the cords for the headphones start breaking down. Could just have been me but they didn’t hold up and they don’t seem to back the product.

Agreed. I’ve tried a few different ones and these are the best so far:

“like”
X1 Audio (formerly H2O Audio).
I love their products.
I’m in the camp of not using them at all. But, I suppose that if you are playing the theme from Jaws, you stroke rate will increase as it moves through. Better yet, get underwater speakers and let everyone share in the joy :).
I think you should try something inexpensive at first. I tried some once because I was bored with lap swimming but music kind of takes away the meditative sounds the pool makes when you are swimming. I had to fuss with them so much and I had a hard time focusing on my workout and technique. If you find that you like swimming with music get something that is more comfortable but I didn’t like it so sorry, I don’t have recommendations for what to buy.
