Recommend pedals for my mother

She wants to ride my old Miyata on a trainer next to my dad during winter

We are the same size, so I will make alterations to the bike fit to make it more ‘comfy’ for her, but otherwise want to keep the bike with components that I can use to do the occasional ride/race on the Miyata when I visit home (with just minor adjustments).

Any recommendations? She will most likely ride only on the trainer, so relative ease of clipping in/out is not so important. I am mostly interested in what pedal you would recommend for a mom who is well kept, but not athletic. (float? no float? ) and that I can still use to train and race occasionally.

thanks!

Ziva

Does she need clipless pedals? Maybe it would be easier just to use platform pedals with (or without) toe clips.

I need the clipless pedals  (blush)

Just trying to justify what would work for her as well.

Well, if I were you I’d get whatever clipless pedals you want, and let your mom stick with the old-fashioned stuff. It sounds like she just wants to spin on the trainer to get in shape a little and spend time with your dad, and I don’t know if she needs to go to the trouble of buying special shoes and learning how to clip in and out to do that. (Or are you and your mom going to be sharing the bike for training, too? If you’re both going to be using it frequently, I guess you do need to get her into clipless pedals. Switching pedals is so easy even I can do it (now, after only one mishap), but you don’t want to be doing it twice a day.)

FWIW, I have Speedplay Zeros, which cost me $100, and they work fine.

There’s a motivational part to wanting clipless pedals for the mom-- everyone in the family has them, and rides ‘real’ bikes! I’m sure she’d enjoy cliping in and out and all the rest of the little ‘bike rituals’.

I was looking at buying a shoe/pedal combo for her, or look for good sale stuff.

If I phrase the question differently then: Recommend pedals for *me, *that my mom would also enjoy using,
(that would be most ‘comfortable’ for a middle-aged lady)

I can switch pedals without problem, but really dont want to have to do that every time I get home; and I dont want her to feel as though she gets equipment that I myself dont consider good enough…

Ah, gotcha. What can I say? I’m a clod.

I like the Zeros. Don’t see why your mom wouldn’t, too.

Alrighty  will look at the Zeros! thanks!

Anyone else have a suggestion? Something easy on the knees and ITB that you’d get for your own mom?

What about the Shimano M-somethings - the one’s that are regular flat pedal on one side and clips on the other.

These: https://shop.sunrisecyclery.com/item/307/

Shimano SPD Pedal, M324

Kind of heavy and bulky on the road, but your mom has a choice of which side to use.

I second the Zeros. They may be a little spendy for what she will be using them for, but they’re super simple, and I think float is a good thing.

Edited to add:

Aw crap… I’m not sure if I mean the zeros or the X-???. The ones without the adjustable float that are cheaper.

easy of entry and lower spring retention for those whose ankles aren’t made of iron…Look PP357
.

ah- there’s a 2001 model of the PP357 on sale at nashbar for $64, would you say that is a good year and price ?

ps. thank you for your help on the handlebar/stem change issue. Im pleased to say the whole thing took 20min after I bought handlebar tape.

I was leaning away from SPDs, but that pedal may be a good idea!

for that pedal brand new…it is a very good price…bought a ussed set for one of our road bikes for $55. SPD might be as good a choice as Speedplay…both have dual sided entry…if you’re thinking single sided might be a bit hard for a first timer. SPD you can use with more normal soled shoes too I believe. Glad the handlebars thing worked out…knew you could do it.
