Recommend me a family friendly North American 70.3

I’m looking at July 2026 or later, bonus points if driving distance from Toronto. I’ve done Muskoka and not interested in doing it again. Will have two small kids and a three month old.

Extra bonus points for budget friendly (so I can bring grandparents) and plenty of kid friendly activities. And a relatively flat course :joy:

Would love to hear about your excellent (or not) relevant experiences🙏🏻

Budget friendly and Ironman do not go together

Not at all in driving distance, but Salem 70.3 is a great option. There are some great easy hikes to water falls just a short drive out of town. And on and around race day, there is a fun water feature thing that kids love to play at in the park.

Doesn’t this search show you all you need to know?

Touché. I meant more the surrounding area and accommodations, especially. Have done enough IM to know you are not joking.

What age kids?

Thanks, appreciate that. I have filtered and searched on IM, but basically every event advertises itself as an ideal, family friendly destination. Thus looking for recommendations based on real life experiences.

6, 3, currently incubating infant

And I am not attached to the IM brand, just the 70.3 distance fwiw

Ohio in Sandusky worked well traveling from London. It was very close and the run has so many little twists and turns through the city it was easy to spectate as many times as your family wants to move to see you. It’s also nice bc Cedar Point is right there and your 3 YO would get in free. They often have deals going where you can get tickets at a decent price. If you go to Canada’s Wonderland they have an all parks pass that would get you into both CW and CP.

IM70.3 Texas (End of March next year, historically early April)

Moody Gardens area is very kids friendly - rainforest, big aquarium and “science exhibit” also my daughter loves going to rainforest cafe after the race and doing the ride they have in there. You also have the Galveston pier with various rides.

Beach is pretty horrid and in March it might be too cold for the pool, but my daughter (4) loves going for the aquarium and rainforest cafe

EDIT: Race is as flat as they get. Can be windy on the bike and humid on the run (fingers crossed the run will be better with it now being in March rather than April)

Barrelman Niagara/Welland, Challenge Esprit Montreal, Challenge Cap de Quebec, 70.3 Tremblant.

I was in and out of Challenge Esprit for $200 hotel, $250 entry fee, $12 electricity (car), $50 dinner. That’s decent for a half Ironman

Drove into Montreal evening before race, biked from downtown hotel to race start morning of race, did the race, biked back to hotel (late checkout), took shower and drove home. Total spent was $512 all in. It was probably my best race of the year (I did 70.3 Puerto Rico, 70.3 Victoria, 70.3 Tremblant, 70.3 Muskoka, Kingston Long Course, Brockville Olympic) .

There is lots of good accommodations in Montreal if you go with family and they don’t have to waste time watching you race…just get on your bike and ride over and race and come back while they sleep in.

Musselman is in mid July and is like 200 miles from Toronto. The Finger Lakes region of NY is fantastic.

Michigan 70.3

I just did it this year because a buddy signed up for it as his one race of the year and he wanted some company. It’s a super small town right on the lake and perfect for little kids. The finish line is right by the local park right on the shore so your kids can have fun in and out of the water all day. It’s the kind of community where I’d let my 7 year old take her bike to the lake in the morning and come home at sunset.

The swim is wetsuit legal and mostly honest I would say. The bike isn’t totally flat, but I wouldn’t call it hilly either. The run course is great with plenty of support through most of the two laps.

Gulf Coast 70.3 for sure. Lots of resort type hotels, things for the family to do, great beach.

But not in July or later and a 20 hour drive not counting stops.

Come race with us at Michigan Titanium in August!

Check these guys out. Its very inexpensive and low key. The swim is in very nice water, the bike has great roads (believe it or not in NY). Due to a bad knee, I skipped the run so I can’t comment, but planning to go back next year. Its on one of the finger Lakes and about 20 minutes from Watkins Glen. Lot of outdoor stuff to do. Its also not of of the more known “tourist towns” so should be cheaper than the other lake towns. There were at least a few Canadians there this year.

GMAN beat me to it, and the new Musselman bike course is very flat, especially for lake country. B.Mc’s suggestion is a nice spot as well, somewhat hillier than Mussel. People do rave about Barrelman, also very flat.

eta: also central/west-central NY is very inexpensive, particularly comparing to metro areas.

Thanks everyone for weighing in. I think given the uncertainties of family life with an incoming newborn will be leaning towards a fall (or later) race next year. @devashish_paul you’ve pushed Montreal to the top of the list! @Lagoon also strongly considering Michigan, thanks!

Waterman’s triathlon in Rock Hall MD was a pretty great indi race. It’s in September. Cool little town on the Chesapeake. Might be a bit too far of a drive but figured it was worth a mention.

Cant say enough about Musselman as well. The race director is a friend and does a great job. Fast and scenic course that always attracts a lot of fast athletes.
