Recommend a swim coach on Manhattan

Looking to take some swim classes.

I have a pretty good position and need to focus on the propulsion part.

Can anyone recommend a good coach on Manhattan?

I am looking for an in-water technique oriented coach, not a deck coach.

Primarily free, but am insterested in all four strokes.

Bill Myles at the Athletic Club at the Equitable Center. 787 7th Avenue. With under-H20 video. He has been doing it for 25 years ++. Still has the prettiest butterfly you will ever see. Not the most articulate fellow, but he is very animated in his physical demonstrations. This is where he excels. I think he also teaches swimming at CCNY and is a college swim coach in Queens. He’ll get your freestyle stroke count down and your power up. It’s in the mastery of the glide. His mobile is 917 721 2756.

Never used him, but I’ve spoken several times with Stefan @ SBR. He does in-pool work in their Fastlane. Relatively expensive if I remember right, but it IS at SBR.

Might be worthwhile checking out what’s available at Asphalt Green.

My two favorites are Robert Watson (robert@maximumpropulsion.com) and Boris Talan (boristalan@mac.com).

i highly recommend Stefan Bill, endless pool is a bit strange at SBR but once you get used to it, its very helpful. He also does group swims at a pool downtown.

you can email him here

+1 for Stefan Bill. I love his group swims. You do have to take some private lessons with him first, which are excellent- he helped my technique tremendously. He provides totally individualized attention during his group swims, which are 2 hours long twice a week. Great workout.

I can highly recommend Stefan Bill who is a Total Immersion qualified coach and very accomplished swimmer himself. He has helped me completely turned my stroke around and I am on the road to becoming a competent swimmer. He is an excellent communicator and has an uncanny ability to pinpoint exactly where weaknesses are and suggest the right adjustments - so progress is fast and constant. I’m doing IM distance swims and I’m very confident that this year I’ll have a more relaxed, more efficient and faster swim - and that’s entirely down to Stefan’s coaching. Some people mentioned he is more expensive than most - that may be true but my response is that you get what you pay for. A colleague of mine pays a little less but she’s in a pool in a class of 30 and is getting little or no attention to her stroke technique - she is very frustrated. What feedback she does get it, frankly, not very useful - and htis is from a tri-club swim coach. Stefan can be contacted through SBR and has a variety of ‘plans’ depending on your needs. Good luck.

Hi Bjorn,
I have been working with Stefan Bill, from SBR (stefan@sbrshop.com) for several months. He is a Total Immersion coach who brings a wealth of competitive experience, much patience, a keen eye for technique, and an excellent way of communicating with his students. He completely took apart my stroke (which needed it!) and put it back together again, properly! The endless pool at the SBR store is a great place to learn and perfect your stroke. He works with beginners to elites. I can’t say enough about him! You will be very glad if you take lessons with him, at whatever level swimmer you are now!

Go to Asphalt Green.

No offense to anyone named, but this is where we all want to say “Go see Doug Stern.”
