Zombi 2 (Zombie in the US)
Braindead (I think it’s called Dead Alive in the US)
Land of the Dead (not as good as the earlier Romero ones but hey, what is?)
Dellamorte dellamorte (aka Cemetary Man)
Dawn of the dead remake
The Evil Dead moves have some zombies in them too, sort of. Definitely watch these if you haven’t.
I’ll try to remember some more. I haven’t seen many horror movies recently, my wife doesn’t seem to enjoy them
I think Diary of the Dead is great. George Romero’s latest. My kid’s bought me Shawn of the Dead on DVD. It still cracks me up even after seeing it 5 times.
Not at all the same. Vampires don’t really float my boat, but like BarryP, I just can’t get enough of zombie movies. Ideally they should be apocolyptic, extremely gory, and lingeringly disturbing in some way other than just the violence. (28 Days and 28 Weeks Later fit the bill perfectly.) Just plain over the top gross is fine, too - I love Evil Dead II.
Unlike vampires, zombies have very little in the way of angst issues.
I actually liked the sequel. Yes, the plot sucked. The Code Red stuff was pretty stupid. The recurring Dad Zombie was dumb. But I thought the overall production, sound track, and cinematography was very good.
And the opening of that movie was one of the best zombie scenes I’ve ever seen. I think it stands as a short story on its own. I watched that scene twice again yesterday. My heart drops everytime I see his wife banging on the window, it pounds when I see the zombies running over the hill after him…the boat scene, all amplified by the awesome theme music, and then finaly he gets away…“Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit…”
