Recommend a good half in September?

I’m looking to train for a half next year. Are there any good ones in late August through early October?

Here in Calif. there’s Big Kahuna in Santa Cruz, or the very affordable Superfrog in late September.

If you are on the east coast, Firmman in Rhode Island is a really nice race.

Duke 1/2 is nice.

come join us at Longhorn Tri Fest, Austin, TX…Oct 5-7…www.longhorntri.com

Barry- nothing better then Vancouver in mid September!. This is a new half this year, so they should have any wrinkles ironed out for you if you are looking at 08. It is being put on by Lance Watson who knows a thing or two about races!. www.lancewatson.com/VancouverInternational.htm

Savageman in WV looks like its going to be great in every way. Mid-september, and drivable from your place.

Ottawa 1/2 first week of Sept
Montreal 1/2 Middle of Sept

The Great Floridian runs a full and a half the same day. The half is called the Florida Challenge, run on Oct. 20th this year:

It’s a great race and a good vacation spot all in one! I’ll be there for the 5th year in a row this fall to finally kick some butt!

I second the recommendation for Big Kahuna. Great location (Santa Cruz), some speed in the field, rolling hills along Highway 1, a flat run course (finish in sand). Well organized every year. NOT a high-hype race…

any particular location? Degray Lake Half in mid August has become one of my fav’s. One of Arkansas chain of pristine lakes, ride on scenic Ark. logging roads with little or no traffic, and run through the woods. But HOT!

If you want something tough, you can’t beat savageman (savagemantri.org). If you’re looking for a faster half, check out Bassman (http://www.citytri.com/bmtri.htm). I did the oly distance race they put on in the spring. The swim and bike course are both gorgeous and (depending on wind) fast.
The race really has a fun, laidback feel.

Prairieman Half is just outside of Dallas, Tx, and usually held mid-September. It is flat and fast but usually very hot with no shade. Great race!

If you are not married to an exact distance, then I highly recommend the Santa Barbara tri…1m swim, 35b, 10m run…Just a little over 3 1/2 hours for good athletes, and usually some great parties. If you go, hook up with Emilio, and you are guarenteed a fun time. If it’s a family trip, then the wife will love you for taking her there…It’s an ocean swim, but in a protected area, only drawback…

the nutmeg state half on 9/23 is going to be great. Good pro field, awesome age group awards, over 40k in giveaways and prizes, and set in the woods of Northwest CT on what will be an empty course. If you are in TX or that area go to the half KJ mentioned. They do an awesome job with all their races.

Grand Columbian - Grand Coulee, WA. 9/16. Well run, good SWAG/Food and a very challenging bike course.

I second FirmMan in RI – very nice venue. Watch out for the last 1/4 mile of the run …on the beach.

Grand Columbian in September.
Pigman 1/2 in Iowa in August.

Mightyman Montauck- beautiful scenery, hilly run, great venue, it has some character to it.
Last year it was held in a monsoon but I still enjoyed it. I think it’s the 1st day of October.

Another vote for Grand Columbian.
