- Elements of Style – Strunk & White. (Doesn’t cover the plot, character, stuff, but it will teach you to be an effective writer, which is most important.)

I can recommend several:
A Book Of Five Rings – Miyamoto Musashi. (THE BEST book ever written on strategy for developing yourself as a solitary warrior).
Warfighting: The Marine Corps Book of Strategy – A.M. Gray. (Very military minded, but still outstanding. Harder to get below the surface than the others, but short and to the point.)
On War – Claus Von Clausewitz. (The definitive manual of Western warfare.)
The Art of War – Sun Tsu. (The first, and still most complete, book ever written on warfare on all scales.)
The Prince – Niccolo Machiavelli. (The most psychological of all of them, IMO. Even if you do not choose to execute plans in Machiavellian fashion, it is good to understand how other people might be trying to manipulate you.)
If you read those books and really work to understand them, you will be prepared for whatever obstacles life and people will place in front of you.
Another good one, not quite of the same class as the others, but still good, is Hagukure: The Book Of The Samurai – Yamamoto Tsunemoto. (Might be right up your alley since this focuses on the solitary warrior.)
#2 - you’ve got to go with the Duke, “Dog”.
- Eric Underhill Lamont III of Shelterlock Orchard. But my mom just called him “Spark.”
