Reasons to AVOID soy in any diet

I think I am like many triathletes in that I like to be well versed in the benefits of the nutrition I choose. While investigating the benefits of soy in my diet, I came across this article. It discusses some very serious drawbacks from soy in the diet, and has very well documented and thorough data backing the claims they make.

Before you flame me for talking bad about soy, or for falling prey to crazy internet health articles; I just want to say that I know that there will always be two sides to every argument. And surely one could find scientific studies to back just about any nutritional decision they might make. With that said, read this article with a grain of salt if you must; but read it nonetheless:

The guy has some valid points as far as eating non or minimally processed food but then loses credibility with the claims of the stuff he sells as being a “miracle food” and “triple your fat burn”. He has some other suspect claims on his site as far as the stuff he sells. As far as the benefits of soy, I think the jury is still out. I know someone who is a test subject in a long term study on the anti-cancer effects of soy intake. the study is being conducted by one of the leading cancer research institutes in the US. As far as nutrion claims, with many beneficial foods, effects are often seen and reported before there is a thorough understanding of the mechanism.

The best book I have ever read on nutrition is Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating (Paperback)
by Walter C. Willett, P. J. Skerrett

It’s basically the same stuff; veggies, lean protein and exercise, but everything is backed by scientific studies over the years. He says the same thing about soy, it’s okay in moderation but not something to be used daily. It really is a great book and I would recommend it over any other book I’ve read.

Regardless of whether the author is legit or not - I have avoided soy in any appreciable quantity ever since I read that monks use it to lower their libido, etc. David k

Well then I am proof positive that it doesn’t work because my libido is in top gear 24/7!

I eat a ton of it. I think that’s why I never have to shave my legs anymore.

Well,

everything in moderation. Not worse than consuming large amount of milk or meat.

I will stay away from regular milk. This stuff nowadays makes you fail every drug test.

You don’t need HGR, steroids, or antibiotics. Milk in large quantities should do the trick.

any ref. on milk and stuff that could give a + test?

you may need a man bra soon.

They (soy products) definitely give me flatus. (gas–in my case stinky)

The growth hormone part was a joke and there is no evidence that the bGH (bovine), which is supposingly used in cattle is effective in humans. However, the hGH (human) isoform is similar enough to bGH to suspect “side effects” for the human endocrine system.

I think you would have to suckle gallons of condensed milk to test positive for bGH. The levels we are talking about are still ppm, but that doesn’t mean it will have no effect on your endocrine system. They are hormones after all where ppm can be a significant concentration.

No visible foul, no harm? Don’t think so.

I do not want to start a conspiracy theory, but I have become wary of the quality of milk. I can pretty much nail down milk as the culprit for slow recovery, constantly tired legs with excessive water incorporation as well as other hormonal changes (skin). And no, I am not lactose intolerant. This may be highly individual, but I think I do not do well on “american” milk (never had those problems in Europe).

When I looked at the literature, there are plenty of references regarding sulfonamide antibiotics in milk (For example the limits for hormone and antibiotics concentration in milk are significantly higher in the USA compared to the EU). This is something that apparently really affects me and I was able to nail that down by going through months and months of testing my diet for what would give me those above symptoms.

Industry claims there is no problem. But this is the cattle-industry we are talking about. Remember the stir-up about the study about milk-safety and terrorism? They pushed the researchers (o.k., they “asked”) not to publish the results. Go figure.

So me thinks: Where you see smoke, there is a fire.

Now I need a steak; well done; from argentinian farmed cattle.

I drink a lot of milk, and have never noticed an adverse effect… of course I’m not giving myself a full endocrine workup just ot be sure either…

And steak should be prepared medium rare

Well, if you take a synthetic thyroid hormone (for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, for example) , you shouldn’t drink or take soy products. Something about their interaction.

Spent half a year with the shakes before going to the doc about my shakes (Hey, who can’t postpone Parkinsons news?) only to find out that decreased soy was the problem. My increased dosage (later causing the shakes) was also due to soy. Scary.

You were conditioned to handle the additional “load” from the time you first sucked american milk from a bottle

I did say that this is an individual thing. I feel really sick when I have to go on certain high dosed antibiotics that shouldn’t give a healthy human any trouble.

However, I have three friends and other acquaintances who did not grow up here and who had similar problems with dairy. One of them is not even doing sports. I have to say that I also have met many others that did not have any problems.

I’d rather have my steak medium too, but it has to be well done to nuke everything

What kind of bike is a Libido? Is it made of carpet fibre? It sounds fast!

This reminds me a lot of the book “Our Stolen Future.” Anyone who is interested in the subject of hormone disrupting chemicals should check it out. A very quick read. Plus, you will never want to eat anything that has touched plastic again.

This “Dr” looks like a quack to me. He’s linked from another website that must be the re-incarnate of “Dr” Fatkins. It seems like this site is for people who feel bad that they’re not vegetarians and need “weapons” to put down those who make different food choices than they do.

If soy is so bad for you, why do the Japanese live 10 years longer than people in the rest of the advanced countries in the world, despite having one of the highest smoking rates?

plus reproductive cancers among women are way lower in countries with high concentrations of soy in the diet.

I’m lactose intolerant. Soy or nothing for me, so I’ll take soy.

Me neither.
