It’s good to do a single event every once in awhile. Maybe just to see if those running snobs are right about triathletes and their mediocrity in any one event. I have a mixed report.
On Memorial Day, I ran a half-marathon. It was a decent sized event but I’m not sure how many. Anyway, in my AG (45-49) I placed 9th with a 1:36. Pretty good for me 'cause I don’t consider myself a runner.
I’m primarily a swimmer and in Tri’s I usually win the swim (unless Monty is racing, but I’m getting closer). So I do this open water swim around Huntington Beach pier, here in Souithern California - about a half-mile swim. There’s about 200 racers for the mass start of 18 YO’s and up. I got to experience, first-hand, the crunch the MOP’s get caught up in. Pretty wicked, that combined with 4 foot surf, a quick moving cross-current that wanted to suck you into the pier… WOW! Well I got through it and got 27th overall and 8th in my AG. Others in my AG placed 2nd, 4th and 11th overall. I pretty much had my ass handed to me (by both swimmers in my AG and a couple of waves) and that’s a good thing. It puts me back into a perspective that I have more work to do. Sure was a fun 11 minutes of thrashing about!
Cycling is my weakest. I know where I stand on the bike. No need to enter any bike races. Well, maybe I’ll try a TT, sometime.
