Reality check: A carbon/Shimano 105 tri bike for... $3600?

One major bicycle manufacturer is betting that a $3600+ (at full margin) Shimano 105 equipped triathlon bike will sell.

That struck me as oddly high. The frame is very nice and also offered at higher prices with Ultegra, Dura-Ace spec.

I thought this may be above the high-water mark for a 105 equipped bike.

Guys… what do you think?

depends on the frame obviously, would be a hell of a deal on a Look 496. Do tell…

Well considering I am looking at a full Ultegra groupset online right now for $500 and a full Dura-Ace groupset for about $850, I say no way…unless it is a P3C!

And these are groupsets with STIs, not aero groupsets which are much cheaper.

Yeah. Same here.

Faris has one.

for the gruppo yes but you will still need things like wheels, seat, bars etc
.

It have to be one of the most aero, nicest riding, lightest frames on the market to go by that. They’d have better luck just selling a frame i think.

I understand that. But if full Ultegra can be had for $500, replace the STIs with bar-end shifters and you have to be looking at $400. Then take what a bike company can get when they are buying 100s of groupsets. Add in some bars and wheels and the whole build is under $1,000. So a $2,600 frameset?

That sounds about right for them, they still want, and apparently get, lots of money for aluminum road bikes with crappy spec. Bet they fly out of the stores.

With the whole exchange rate, the US dollar just doesn’t go very far in Connecticut these days…

Haven’t they always demanded a premium for their frames?

That’s a big ask in this case.

My guess was the lower version of the E-TTX. The Dura-Ace/Bontrager build is $5,600 and the Ultegra build is like $4,600 so $3,600 made sense.

But I have heard the Trek would be around $3,000 as they were also user a lower-level carbon for the frame. At $3,000 for a 105 E-TTX it’s high…but not unreasonable as I think it is one of the better engineered frames out there.

At $3,600…no way, not for 105 on anything other than a DA or a P3C.

well if it is the Cannondale, only rear cog, chain and front der is 105, rear der is ultegra and other parts are their own brand (which I am not a fan of)
I guess the main focus is the frame. it is a really high quality usa frame you can’t feel the seems where carbon ends and where aluminum starts.
But it is their marketing strategy as well as other big brands like Trek Equinox series. my first bike was a trek carbon with all 105 components.
i’d rather to have that bike as a frame then with those components and probably on 1% of the buyers will NOT upgrade.

Does it come with S-Bends?

PM sent your way Tom.

I can’t believe they are going this route after finally putting together a frame that could compete with Felt and Cervelo. Based on what you are saying that would eliminate them from my list considering the spec. As a dealer you have to be scratching your head. Interesting.

Oi, that seems high. A '07 Felt B2 with DA (crankset, pedals, rear der, brakes, shifters, cassette) and Ultegra ( front der ) cost me less. Several hundred less.

Nope…not when you can get a Kuota Kalibur with Ultegra for about the same price. There are better deals out there than that. What wheels are spec’ed? Are they at least putting some decent hoops on there?

Isn’t the new Cannondale tt/tri bike supposed to be full carbon?

My bad, I just looked at the 07 model on the web I was talking about it, apperarently the new one has all 105.
I don’t see a problem here… They have 3 models. one with top of the line and one lowest end. So is it really bad if they reach to every market out there? There are other manufacturers doing the same thing and funny suprise is the difference between 105 speced models and frame set is minimal.

I think it better come with some pretty darn nice wheels.
