Besides gels, bars, cookies, etc. What have you or seen people eat? Ive done 4 IM’s on Powerbar Gels & Fignewtons & Endurance Gatorade. There has been MANY times when I wanted some real food.
In the two races I’ve done, I’ve put a peanut butter sandwich in my special needs bag. I have never tasted a yummier PBJ.
For IM I use Carbo Pro/Cyto mixture and Carb Boom gels on the bike but I do treat myself to a Payday candy bar at the half way point. Nice and salty and tastes so good. I find though that I do best with fluids only during the bike. I end up choking if I try to eat solids.
That’s what I did too. PB sandwich tasted so good at that point!
I’ve always put a mcdonalds hamburger in my bike special needs bag…
Last year someone at an aid station on Richter Pass handed me a little baggie of two peanut butter cookies. I enjoyed those while finishing the climb. That was nice too.
Went through 4 peanut butter and honey sandwiches in the bike at IMOO last year. They were delicious.
I saw a bike at IMWI 2005 with 4-5 bagels threaded on the handlebars.
I saw a bike at IMWI 2005 with 4-5 bagels threaded on the handlebars.
What about the creamy cheese?
My thought was that instead of creamy cheese he was sweating on the bagels for added flavour.
Really I gagged at the sight of it.
beef jerky

Besides gels, bars, cookies, etc.
Are you referring to the workout specific variety of those foods or just those foods in general?
On the bike I have used Reese’s Sweet & Salty w/ Peanut Butter Granola Bar, Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies, Little Debbie Oatmeal PBJs, strawberry/blueberry fake fig newtons, and sugar wafer cookies. I thought about Nutella with a spoon, but decided that would be a little hard to manage.
Turkey sandwich. Sometimes you just get hungry and want something more substantial and less sweet than GU, a banana, or cookies. I packed it the night before, put it in my needs bag and enjoyed a nice little meal on wheels.
I haven’t used it during a race, because I stick to all liquid, but in training I’ve eaten peanut butter and nutella occassionally during my long rides.

I am thinking for IMFL this year that I am putting a slice of pizza and a ham and cheese sandwich in my special needs bag. On many of my longer rides, 120+ miles, i’ll do laps and stop off at my house and both seem to work great.
For all of you that put deli meat in a sandwich into your special needs, aren’t you worried about the meat going bad? The thought of that meat sitting in the sun for hours just about makes me gag!
Pringles are fantastic on a long ride or in an IM (or even a HIM). I ate 2 things of the pringles snack packs on teh IMLP bike. I ate some as I ran out of transition too in a HIM and had my best run by 20 min (although I thnk it was more the run training than the pringles). I tend to be able to eat anything on the bike and not upset my stomach though.
I used smuckers ‘uncrustables’ in IMAZ this last year and they worked great! Took one with me at the start and had another in special needs. If you haven’t seen them before, they are frozen PBJ sandwitches that are stamped into a circle (hence the name) and individually packaged. Try some in training, you won’t regret it!
potato and cheese perogies, boiled, salted and in a ziplock…mmmmmmmmm
.
I thought of that but I figured I put it in the needs bag when its cold and it sits from about 6:00 am to somewhere around 10 or 11 am depending on how fast you swim and bike so most of that time, it hasn’t really got too hot yet. My kids lunches go from 7:00 am to noon with no refrigeration and they still eat them with no complaints.
