Is the upgrade worth it on the H3? The upgrade worth it to an IM age grouper that plans on averaging 19 mph ish? They will be clincher if it matters....
No. I just cannot justify the expense for ceramic bearings etc. when the results from the “upgrade” are so minimal. At the speed you are claiming, I just don’t think it’s worth it.
I am considering the same purchase and I go about the same pace as you and the guys at HED said that the cermic bearings are not worth it not to mention the hassle when they go wrong.
In terms of the speed you go at, not sure that this should be the discriminator, more if the ceramic bearing gives you say a minute over an IM what difference will that make to your experince, for a pro maybe everything for a Kona slot maybe everything. However it is likley that the minute could have been saved for the 19-22 MPH athelte by training harder, staying aero for longer and being faster in transition, so I guess the speed you go at is a factor when considering ceramic bearings just not in absolute terms

No offense but I don’t understand why people say " instead of upgrading x, just train harder to save time. Why don’t you upgrade and train harder and save double the time?

They’re saying that to them, the cost doesn’t balance out. It’s easier for this person to justify spending all the time on the bike to be faster than to spend the extra several hundred dollars to get the same speed.
I am averaging 19 now, but hopefully I will continue to improve and get faster. I am a stronger runner than cyclist, and have only been doing this for three years. Thanks for all the opinions. I guess i will save the upgrade money.
how fast you go has no bearin on whether this is worth
only how much money you make and how much you value probably a 1 second time savings over 100 miles.
=)

Have you considered Phil Wood’s Carbonyte bearings?
FR option worth it? It may give you a piece of a MPH and a small one at that. “Is it worth it maybe”, I personly have had many bikes over the years win by a wheel and loose by a wheel. I wish I had them on all the bike that lost by a wheel. If you want a pair drop us an e-mail. If your a Vet or have a family member thats a Vet I will get you a nice discount on the wheels with and with out ceramic bearings. bicycledoctor@att.net

Not that I have built a model to calcualte this but who knows I might in my one week of rest in April, but lets look at this objectively. Said athelete on current gear does IM bike leg in a respectable 5:53. He buys good prodcut from HED and goes say 5:50. He buys the ceramic bearing and goes maybe 5:49.
Said athelete does none of the above and gets good coach and works his butt off and goes 5:25. The training far out weighs anything else. I defend his right to buy race wheels, as they will give him a reasonable amount of free speed and they look cool.
Yes if he buys the bearing he goes even faster but the amount that he goes faster buy is negligible when compared with the other factors
My philosophy is that if you have the means, then go for it, get the upgrade. I think there is tremendous psychological benefit from knowing you have the best equipment possible while you race.
