Re-taping/building up aero bars (with pics)

The other day (more than a month ago), the bar tape on my right aerobar desided to unravel mid-ride. I didn’t have time to re-tape it, so I just wrapped some ducttape around it. It worked fine, but boy was it tacky. I knew I needed to re-tape it, and I had extra bar tape, but I hadn’t had the time (or the right adhesive tape) to get to it. After stopping at thre differetn stores (thanks for nothing Lowes and Wal-mart), I ended up at Menards. first I got sent to the electrical department, then they told me to go to the hardware department, and then finally I was directed back to the paint department near where I started. (Go figure) Anyway, I picked up some black ductape (much better than electrical tape becasue it sticks better and doesn’t stretch.)

So I started my project. (sorry, I’m just including links becasue the photos are huge, and when I shrink them, they lose their proportion.)

Here’s the before pictures:

Notice, it’s dirty, tacky, and the background is a mess.

Next:

I take off the bar tape.

Notice how small the handholds are. That had been a great frustraion to me. I don’t have gigantic hands, but they are far from small either. I don’t mind the aerobars, but I hate not being able to wrap my hand around the Visions (IfI were flexibile enough, I could probably wrap my hands around them twice.) This is uncomfortable, and it cause hands cramps and control issues during prolonged braking, climbing, ect…

So I decided to customize:

I took some special garden/insulating tube shaped foam I had and cut it into small strips. I then applied these to the bottom protion the the handlebar, and taped them in place (just to be doubly sure they wouldn’t move.)

This increase the depth of the handles with out increasing the width.

I then bar wrapped over the tape, as normal:

This is so much more comfy. I’m able to nest the inside of my knuckles with the ridge that is formed. This: 1. keeps blood circulating in my hands, 2. Allows my to have a little bit more control over where I am turning, and 3. shouldn’t hurt aerodynamics at all. The hand holds are simply deeper, not wider. Sort of, a reverse airfoil shape. With the brake lever already breaking the airflow infront of the handlebar, I don’t see how this could hurt aerodynamics (heck, maybe it even helps a little bit.) I’d tried to convince someone going into aerobar manufacturing of the merits of this handlebar chape, but I don’t think they were interested. Oh well.

Notice how much cleaner everything is (including the background.)

The last little detail involved a magic (permanent marker.)

I covered up the ugle scratches, and the mis-matched (red) colored vison logo’s, and then I also colored in the goofy rainbow design that is under the aerobar pads. I’ve done this before, and it always lst for a month or more. Much more stealth, and less gawdy.

The foam I used is fairley stiff, it only has a slight amount of give, so that should absorb some road shock, but it doesn’t squish to the point of affecting handling.

I don’t have a long ride on them yet, but they seem much better than before, plus they look cooler and cleaner.
(And with a note to Slowman, notice how I routed the cables internally, as opposed to sticking them where ever I felt like on a pro’s bike.)

Furry rodents should farm out their bike prep. That STILL looks like a Home Depot nightmare of a front end. Duct Tape? Are ya’ kiddin me Gopha?

You have abdicated your style throne with this post.

If you can point me towards something that will actually stick the vision basebar, I’m all ears.
It looks a lot cleaner in person, the flash on the camera seems to highlight creases that aren’t there.

A little alcohol prep and electrical tape (not the SUPER CHEAP WAL-MART brand…but REAL electrical tape) will work just fine. I just taped up a buddy’s VT bars the other day…no problem…

Unless, of course, you LIKE the redneck look.

On a carbon race bike yes, but this aluminum butt buster is the only bike I’ve got.

Tried three different kinds of electrical tape before. a little sweat or lake water and it slides right off.

Gopha,

Nice idea. I am in the process of building up my front end with the same components. I may have to copy your design before I wrap up the bars.

Oh, and I am glad to see someone else with Syntace bars on a Vision base. I thought that it was going to be a fashion no-no. At least I drilled some holes in the aero bars for internal routing.

Jeromy

Just make sure you take off the Syntace logo’s. I’d peel the Vision’s, but they’re under the finish.

Try some hockey stick (some of the sports box stores call it sports tape), available in 1" and 2" widths, tape… black or white.

Try Cateye Adhesive Cotton Handlebar Tape. Its self sticking. I really like the stuff for my aerobars and basebars. Has a VERY secure grip, much better then regular bar tape.

I’d think twice next time you want to point out a bicycle fashion crime.

I never think twice…though in hindsight…

Quite exquisite. Very professional. Bravo!

3M Super 33 Electrical tape…there is no other tape…and it will not slide off.

Of all the people to kluge together a front end with duct tape, Ze Gopha? Yeesh dude. With all the bike fashion comments you make I am shocked!

Record is right (again) on this one: 3M Super 33.

You may be the Forum Jester and perhaps the one person that I look forward to in reading their posts BUT, put the freaking tools down and back away from the bike, you have ZERO skills in bar wrapping and taping. Take it to your LBS or surrender yourself to the bike police, sheeeesh

I’ll see if I can’t clean it up a little more tonight.
In my meek defense though, how many of you guys have tried wrapping bar tape on the vision base bar?

I’m so disappointed!

Gopha,

Dude - I’m crushed. It’s almost as bad as if I found out that Kittycat was actually a fat, pimply 14 year old boy posting during study hall

Were you drunk? Did you forget to turn the lights on in your work area?

I hope this incident has not done irreparable harm to your rep as the ST style rodent. I’ll try to pretend it was all “just a dream”, like on Dallas.

Please get thee to a competent LBS, ASAP.

  1. your computer sensor is incorrectly placed. it should either be as close to the fork crown as possible to minimize the wires zip-tied to the fork, or be as low on the fork blade as possible to minimize the rotational energy of the wheel magnet (microseconds count!). Either way, the wire and the sensor should be zip-tied along the trailing edge of the fork, not the leading edge (it looks more aerodynamic this way, and it’s all about how good it looks!). having the magnet pickup sticking out of the middle of the fork blade is just tacky.

  2. Your brake barrel adjuster is screwed in too far. this is a sign of poorly adjusted brakes, and it limits the adjustments you can make if your wheel loses true during a ride.

  3. For wrapping the hand grips on the vision base bar, try starting at the back (away from the brake lever) and working to the front. wrap the tape over itself to hold it in place at the back of the bar, and use the brake itself like a bar-end plug to tuck it in place at the top of the bar. I haven’t tried this myself with those brake levers and bar, but it should work. it will be worth it to get rid of your duct-tape issues entirely.

Really, I am disappointed. I expected better from someone with such a keen sense of style as yourself. Keep trying though, you’ll get it someday ; )

I’ll be happy to offer more style advice if you’ll post more complete pictures of your bicycle ; )

what the hell is that??? Bontrager bar tape?? ugh… not to mention, your tape spacing interval (I don’t know what to call it) is uneven… take your time next time. Maybe have someone hold the bike for you, or get a work stand! and definitely don’t drink the next time you tap your bars. Please don’t get into wheel building or anything. Attention to detail Gopha!!!
