RD's - How do you draw in collegiate athletes

Race Directors - how do you draw in a large collegiate field? What are the pros and cons of this?

We hosted our race this weekend and for the first time had a fair amount of collegiate athletes. Trying to figure out if we should market to them.

RD’s do you allow them to win the overall awards or just collegiate division?

Thanks

Where are you located? You might want to contact Max Performance (https://maxperformanceonline.com/) Tim puts on six races a season in Massachusetts and he has a HUGE college turnout at some of the races. I believe he specifically markets some of the races to colleges and has collegiate specific awards.

Not a RD, but I work with a race company that usually has a large field of collegiate athletes at races during the school year. There are usually a few races each year that are part of the collegiate conference race calendar. Collegiate athletes ARE able to place overall, but they cannot double dip and win the collegiate division as well. For example, let’s say the top 7 athletes are 1) collegiate male A, 2) AG male A, 3) collegiate male B, 4) collegiate male C, 5) AG male B, 5) AG male C, 6) collegiate male D, 7) collegiate male E. Then the overall awards would be 1-collegiate male A, 2-AG male A, 3-collegiate male B. For collegiate awards it would be 1-collegiate male C, 2-collegiate male D, 3-collegiate male E. AG males B and C would place in their respective age groups.

Does that make sense?

The easiest way to get them is to google search the university clubs in the area and keep the entry fee’s under 60 or 70 bucks.

I coach a collegiate club and there are enough tri’s offering us discounts down to $70 for entry that we don’t give a second thought to anything more expensive unless it’s a bucket list 70.3 or full.

  1. Be in an area that has a significant amount of college tri clubs
  2. Make your entry fee’s VERY cheap for them … we want these kids doing the sport, doing short distances, AND keeping them around. They are the future fo triathlon at a time when the sport is getting older
  3. Create a college division
