I have a pair of the Blackwell Research tubulars (50 in front, 100 in back) and notice a kind of “rattle” sound when I ride. I do not get this sound at all with the training wheels, so I’ve isolated it to the Blackwells. I’m guessing it’s something with the spokes? Has anyone else who has the Blackwell’s noticed this? Or, for all I know, this is typical with carbon race wheels with spokes?
I’ll ask a couple of more questions and get this worked out for you.
Do they both rattle or just one.
Is it a clicking or a rattle
Does the noise seem to be timed to the wheel speed.
Does the wheel make any noise if it’s off the ground and you spin it.
Does it sound like grains of sand inside when you spin the wheel.
Thanks
I noticed a “clicking” sound with mine during IMAZ(100R, 50F). It sounded like it was isolated to the front wheel. In terms of “noise” and “wheel speed”, yes it increased with faster speeds and decreased with slower speeds.
John - Thanks for responding. I’ll try to get answers, to the extent that I can, when I get home and test it out. In the alternative, I live in Austin, so I’m local. I was going to take it into Jack and Adams to get them to check it out, but they’re crazy busy right now and I’m leaving in almost a week for a HIM (freakout!)
I checked out everything that was suggested (including valve extender), and I’m embarrassed to say that the culprit was the unscrewable knob on the front skewer was not screwed in tightly enough. Tightened it up…no problems. I actually intend to unscrew them for the race and carry them in the bento box.
Of course not! To clarify…I’m not unscrewing the QRs themselves. I’m unscrewing the removable skewer lever on the QRs. My Blackwells came with QRs that have removable skewer levers. Sorry for the confusion.

Nice to hear from you John.
Sergio Jr’s Blackwell 100/Disc track set will be used at the Juniors UCI Track World Championships next August. Not by him yet as he is still a Youth rider. His closest cycling friend will use them. Sergio loves his BW track wheel set and he feels good knowing that his friend is going to ride faster. I will keep you updated.
Too bad Cunego was hit by EB virus. We really wanted to see him race the TdF in his new TT position.
Best wishes for the family at Tyler and once again a big thanks for all,
My 100, front, has a noise in it. It does sound sort of like snad. I thought that sometimes a computer magnet can make a bit of noise and maybe it get amplified by the wheel. Frankly not sure what it is, I just got used to it.
