Amazingly hilarious video. Maybe the river is too narrow.
OMG lol this has to be fake. That is the biggest collection of incompetence I’ve ever seen in my life. Hilarious.
Wow! Had they had British accents, I would have thought this was a Monty Python sketch.
As a former rower at Michigan State University, I must say that this stuff does happen. Not too often at the collegiate level, but I have seen high school regattas which are an absolute dumpster fire. I would say this video is completely legit. The biggest issue is that some of the boats have coxswains (girls in the stern yelling “stroke” (no pun intended)), and some do not. The idiots who try to navigate the river while going backwards are doomed from the start. The unfortunate part about this video is that those bots run $45,000+ a piece. Finally, a sport that costs more than triathlon and gets even less media exposure!

That funny, womens crew (not sure if you brenda or dylan) started my junior year in college. They were nice enough to cancel mens lacross (including guys with scholarships) to make it happen. Althohg one of them was a roomate of mine at the time that was only of the biggest assholes I’ve ever met. So I didn’t feel so bad. They were giving away partial scholarships just to fill the squad. Though i will say most of them were real athletes and worked hard. But I racing bicycles at the time on a club team, I was a little jealous I must admit.
The video was great! I was having a rough morning and it was a good distraction.
Hilarious. My favorite is when the guy yells “back it up” and by doing so the boat head straight into the path of another boat. Oh that and the “were still racing here,” at the end.

Were you at Michigan State? I was there from '96 to '00…I definitely knew some of “those” men’s lacrosse guys as well! On the other hand, I knew some cool women’s lacrosse players so it must not be sport specific…
I was at MSU from 97-01. Rowed on the men’s team in 98 & 99, although it was only a club sport. A lot of guys I knew were on lacrosse scholarships from the East Coast…needless to say, they transferred immediately when the varsity program was cut for women’s crew. Most of them were DB’s, so the East Coast was a better place for them anyway.
I’m not sure why you would need to cancel a mens sport when adding a womens sport. Certainly not for Title IX reasons. Womens crew is the second largest sport at the school I work at, football is the largest. The fact that we have womens crew allows us to keep some mens sports that other schools cancel.

It is indirectly for Title IX reasons. Money. Almost all sports are money sinks, excepting men’s football/basketball at some schools. So when you have to add a women’s rowing team to be Title IX compliant, your budget takes a hit. As noted, the shells are expensive. Lot of travel, too. You either have to raise revenue or cut a men’s sport. Some schools choose to cut a men’s sport.
I’m pro Title IX. Coached women’s rowing. Just pointing out the reality.
Correct, but simply dropping a mens program solves the money problem and helps Title IX. My guess is that it has something to do with keeping a specific number of varsity sports as required by the Big Ten as well.
The fact that football and/or basketball teams make money has no impact on Title IX. The expenditures by the university must be directly equivalent to gender % of the student body, which basically means 50/50. So if the football program costs $10M, but earns $15M, the university still needs to spend $10M on women’s sports.
This is why you see more than just men’s rowing being cut. At many schools, EVERYTHING is on the chopping block to keep football.
But women’s rowing is growing by leaps and bounds because shells, and boathouses, etc are expensive. It’s a great offset.
Amazingly, at many schools, you have young women being given scholarships - full ride - for rowing that have never rowed. They are basketball, or volleyball, or similar athletes - tall and strong. I’d guess - and it is just a guess - that the #1 recruiting sport for rowing is not rowing; it’s basketball.
BTW, I sent this video to my rowing coach from Princeton. It made his day…
So if the football program costs $10M, but earns $15M, the university still needs to spend $10M on women’s sports.
Which is an overall increase in expenditure…so revenue and cost do matter in Title IX.
Rappstar is projected to finish no higher than 7th at IMAZ by all accounts…
I believe scholarships have to be close to 50/50 and spending has some formula that ends up favoring - by a little - men’s sports.
The “men’s sports make the money they should get the benefit,” is a tired argument. I am glad it hasn’t been made here. At most schools football is the biggest drain, not the biggest generator.
So… How is the taper going?
