I should probably not even ask about this one. I can get a really good deal on a used Range Rover to replace my old but reliable mini-van.
I’ve owned all kinds of British cars in the old days - Triumphs, MG’s, Mini’s, etc. and they were challenging at times from a reliability perspective, but back in those days cars were simple and I could work on them myself. Not the case any more.
I’ve noticed that Range Rovers don’t have a high resale value compared to their original price, that’s why I could get this one at a seemingly bargain price. But that could also be a bad omen.
Anybody have experience with Range Rovers? Should I just forget it and get another mini-van?
Good point. It’s a small block aluminium V8, the same engine that was in my Triumph TR8, originally 3.5 litre in the TR8 but bored out to (i think) 4.2 in the RR. Was originally a Buick/Oldsmobile design but bought out by the Brits. Gas mileage wasn’t bad on the TR8, but that was light two seater sports car and not a SUV.
Another mini-van is looking better all along. Looks like logic will surpass emotion on this one.
As nice as they are to drive, they also have pretty poor reliability and are very expensive to maintain. There is a reason they don’t hold their value.
I know where you are coming from. I passed on a few of them due to the potential for prolonged problems. Probably the reason for low resale values. I really dont feel like doing that kind of stuff anymore. My previous British cars taught me alot over the years. I just dont enjoy the thought of greasy, beat up, cold hands anymore.
My brother in law is a quality control engineer in the automotive industry and he had nothing but problems with his… If you read up on owner feedback you won’t be impressed… Sure they look super cool but the amount of problems that owners document its like 143 issues for every 100 cars on the road, they rank last or next to last out of ALL cars/trucks that are made…

I hear you guys. Back when I owned MG/Triumphs, British cars were considered to “have character” despite the Lucas electrics, etc. I just don’t want to have to be my own mechanic every other weekend any more.
I found this interesting site. Seems that anything that can go wrong with a RR will go wrong eventually. They do look cool and would be different however.
Interesting website. All of the weird electrical problems brought back memories. Some I thought were rather funny. Just throw logic right out the window when dealing with them. Hope the newer ones are better.
We have a 2006 Range Rover and love it. That being said, I have a patient who actually has a RR repair business. Works solely on RR restoration. I wouldnt buy a used one that isnt under warranty in a million years based on what he tells me. If ANYTHING goes wrong with ours they drive to our house and drop off a temp car for us until they bring back our all fixed. Gotta like that.
I have a 2005 LR3, I have a coworker with a 2006 RR sport, supercharged. mine has 40k miles, his has about 30k.
these have been absolute flawless vehicles, no problems, not even the ones we were warned about. we both get about 15-17mpg,
my fill ups are $65 with premium.
great dealerships in houston is a plus.
free oil changes, free loaner car.
compairing the LR’s to other highend SUV’s they are no worse than a lexus, cayanne, or T’regg. I get that information from different forums where owners post real issues, not where surveys are taken from new owners.
I would recommend the LR3 over the RR, more room in the back
These things are uberkewl. plus i can stand up 3 bikes in the back with a front tire removed.
the 4x4 system is an absolute beast, these things can climb hills you cant on foot.
I would NEVER NEVER own a land rover without warrantee, when the 100k mile is up, its gone
friend of mine got one new, as a grad gift 5-6 years ago? incredible to drive I’ll admit but maintenance is a constant horror whenever my friend comes to town (she’s studying in the UK now). One time I remember her picking up the car from the dealer and not an hour went by before the “check-engine” something or other came up on the text display. Seems like a lemon to me.
That said, she did flip it over high speed on the highway in a snowstorm once, one blown tire, and a slightly dented front grill (she had a push bar) was all that needed fixing… (or so I am told.)
I saw one on its roof a couple of years ago on the 405 Freeway just up the hill from the Getty and it was completely pancaked; the roof was literally level with the bottom of the windshield and the doors. I don’t know if anyone got out of it alive, I don’t know how they could have.
