That’s a BS arguement. I own a vehicle, which I pay taxes on but choose to commute by bike. Therefore, I am overpaying taxes considering vehicle taxes in my state are based on gross vehicle weight. I’m paying for a 4500lbs Avalanche, but am riding a sub-20lbs bike.
San Francisco police are looking for the driver of an SUV who they say mowed down four bicyclists during a five-minute rampage.
Witnesses reported seeing a man in a blue Nissan Rogue weaving in and out of traffic around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday in the city’s Mission District. They say he drove on the wrong side of the road to deliberately run down the victims.
The driver hit three male bicyclists in quick succession. A few minutes later, he hit a fourth, then crashed into a light pole and a parked Jeep Cherokee before running from the scene.
Lt. Lyn Tomioka says police are trying to determine if the driver had known his victims.
Police say three of the bicyclists were taken to the hospital and a fourth was treated at the scene. All suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The cyclist were goddam-lucky to not get killed… Fuck that psycho; other assholes, and possessors of tiny peckers. Oh, I forgot those who text while driving. Anybody got a name for those jerkoffs?
There is no excuse for this behavior. Operating (under license) a dangerous weapon creates an obligation of being the better person, regardless of provocation. You have a beef? Get out of your car or put down your gun and settle it like a man…
Not that this is a new phenomenon but riding in a wide, designated bike lane yesterday morning whioe training I had a vehicle pull alongside and then slowly drift into the bike lane. After waiting a few seconds for the motorist to correct and getting down to about a foot space left on the road I knocked on his passenger rear window. They looked genuinely surprised to see me (despite overtaking me 10 seconds ago and me wearing a bright yellow shirt).
When things like this happen regularly I’m not sure what the solution is other than be as aware and prepared as possible.
I tend to ride my bike trainer a lot more than I have done in the past. Maybe this will not make me as “fast” as outdoor training might, but if I am alive and able to race, …
Seems to me most of the time drivers complain about cyclists breaking the law they’re simply mad that cyclists can get away with it. For example, if I am riding on the side walk on the way to work because you’re stuck in bumper to bumper traffic who gives a damn, I’m helping me, not hurting you (and actually one less car on the road), so who cares. I slow right down for pedestrians, so they don’t care.
And, no, I don’t stop at four way stops on my bike if I don’t see cars coming the other way. Perhaps one day I’ll get a ticket, but until then it costs you nothing.
I tend to ride my bike trainer a lot more than I have done in the past. Maybe this will not make me as “fast” as outdoor training might, but if I am alive and able to race, …It’ll work fine. As long as you’re honest with effort levels all outdoor training really does is practice your shifting, tweak how you approach hills (out of saddle or not, and stepping up intensity while climbing, backing off while coasting, etc.) and things like that. The bulk is always fitness and you can gain that no problem watching a movie in the basement if you want.
I’m currently commuting to work and getting a lot of mileage in that way but I make the trip deliberately longer to avoid spending time on high-traffic roads.
There is no rational reason for any behavior like this. To say that one understands for me implies condonement to a degree of this act of violence. Incidents that I have experienced with other motorists though infuriating does not have me ramming their car with mine. Two wrongs don’t cancel each other out. That said I do not condone some of the bad behavior of some cyclists, but that has everything to do with anti social behavior not compliance with the vehicle code. This just reinforces to me that crazy people are everywhere and crossing paths with them is a matter of chance. It just is tragic when one of these fools uses a car to assault others who do not have equal protection. Though cyclists can at time be annoying, running any down out of frustration does not seem any different than hitting pedestrians who j-walk, ect. What really gets me is that in so many situations the offending driver is not even hitting the actual rider or riders that set them off in the first place. Moreover it is truly amazing how many motorists think that bicycles have no right to be on the road. So much ignorance!
Don’t get me wrong, running down a cyclist with a vehicle is bad in so many ways.
But (unlike a kid screaming in a playground), a cyclist running stoplights, riding the wrong way on a one way street, and blowing through red lights is breaking a law. They are generally endangering themselves more than someone in a vehicle. However, I’ve been a vehicle driver having to avoid a cyclist riding illegally (or simply recklessly) and because of this myself, the passengers in my vehicle, and others in the vicinity of my vehicle were also unnecessarily placed at risk.
I don’t know what the story was with these four cyclists, but I can at least imagine how a vehicle driver could be aggravated by the behavior of some of the cyclists on the roads today. That doesn’t justify this driver’s actions, but all of us who ride bikes suffer because of the behavior of a few idiots and the way they ride their bikes.
Ok, with that logic, kids break the law by throwing things at objects they shouldnt; jay-walking; trespassing; the list does not end. In addition, I would bet every dollar that I have that EVERY person that gets the slightest bit upset about bikers breaking the law do exactly the same…Rolling stop signs, exceeding speed limits, not merging properly, not yielding.
Your statement and any others are completely unjustified. Take an example of a person that cuts in front of you at the supermarket line. Do you think it justified that another patrol pulls out a gun and shoots them? Is this in any way a justification, or is this person deserving of a death sentence??? That is what a vehicle is. MANY, MANY more people are killed by vehicles than by guns (I am including cars on cars); but most people, even many cyclists, dont get it.
I must qualify my statements by saying that I have been hit by 4 hit and run drivers in my last year of college while riding my bicycle; in all cases they were in the wrong. The 5th did stop, but later lied about the incident.

OK, I’m sort of hijacking this thread, but to put things in perspective.
Roughly 31,000 people are killed by firearms in the United States every year. This is about the same number of people killed while driving or riding in a vehicle. Another 5000 people are killed on motorcycles, almost 5000 pedestrians are killed by vehicles, and about 700 cyclists are killed. (I’m guessing most of these cyclists aren’t roadies/triathletes on a training ride or in a race.)
Be careful, but let’s get out there and ride! While riding, it doesn’t hurt to be considerate to others (including vehicle drivers) and don’t blatantly disobey traffic laws. The driver that you aggravate might decide to take it out on me.
i guess i’m an asshole then adn i’m more than good with it as that is exactly how i ride my tarmac and in lycra, why i ride out front of people like yourself and with ease i might add. it’s called bike handling skills, you either have them and can handle the heat or don’t and cry about it calling other people assholes. not knocking you in specific, just saying in general so no hard feelings.
check out 2:10 in this vid…yup, seven time tour champ.

Lance didn’t ride in front of cars cutting them off. In my opinion at the least these types of riders are rude, at the worst they are law breakers and just plain STUPID.
it’s either a car thats’ gonna cut you off or you cut the car off. just make sure you make eye contact and give 'em a smile and a thumbs up in acknowledgement and appreciation for SHARING the road and you should be alright.

i was wanting to post more on this and thought i’d wait until someone brought it back up and low and behold…
listen, my opinion and only my own is that if more people on bikes could control a bike as such in the vids than there would be LESS accidents on the road, many less and more than likely i’d consider you a cyclist as UNLESS you can handle a bike such as the people in the vids and myself and the many thousands of others out there such as i’m guessing ALL pro road cyclists could you are just another person riding a bike in a straight line and you are in my way, all of our way for that matter and not a cyclist by any means.
and I’m not condoning cutting people off but i’m not against it either. if you have skills, use 'em and if you don’t well, that’s all mcdoublee and cmurphy all scared and name calling, textbook weak, textboo groupie.
besides, it’s not a car vs bike situation as everyone has made it out to be but rather it’s ALWAYS a person meeting a person situation and if you are cool about it and make eye contact and show respect you will ride away on good terms as the driver will drive off on his/her own way. always be cool out there and it’s all good. and if not, sh!t happens. You can’t control anyones life but your own and i choose to ride fierce otherwise there’s no point in riding a bike.
how many real road cyclists such as those in the vids do you ever hear about getting in an accident with a car? now how many of you who ride on the sides of the roads in club rides or whathaveyou get hit? what would the ratio be, about 1 of those (us) guys vs for every 1000 of your what has sadly come to be known of as a cyclist?
i’d much rather ride aggressive than be a sitting duck.
