Rainy Marathon Wisdom

The weather forecast for this weekend’s MB Marathon is calling for 70% chance of rain. Not having “trained” in the rain, any nuggets of knowledge for running the marathon in this kind of weather? Body-glide everything? Vaseline what? how about running in wet socks and shoes for the entire length? Just how much skin will I lose? BTW, this is my first marathon… and I’d rather make it memorable than forgettable!

I’ve been lucky that I don’t seem to have foot troubles in the rain. However, as a precaution, I sometime smear vaseline all over my feet from the arch forward (including all over/between the toes). Good luck on your first marathon! Don’t let the weather be the thing that gets you

My First marathon in 2004 was pouring rain and 40 degrees for 18 of the 26.2 miles. The two things I learned was rain hurts when it hits you in the eyes wear glasses and protect the nipples. It’s great because you have a built in excuse if you do well your a stud if you blow up it was because of the weather its a win win so go for it.

Surgical tape over the nipples and good socks. If you have fans following you maybe they could have extra clothes in case the rain stops and you want to feel fresh. Some head and hand protection might be good also, I got damn cold in my all rain marathon.

Have fun. Don’t concern yourself if it’s raining, take what it gives, and enjoy. You will have ups and downs, just focus on the goal of finishing.

Remember the old adage of not trying anything new on race day.

Have you ever used vaseline/body glide on toes before? If not, a little goes a long way, in fact, I’d caution against it. You don’t want slippery squishy toes for your marathon.

Never ran in rain before? Well, your feet and socks will get wet. Do you run with 2 pairs of socks, or a double lined pair of socks?

Main things to consider, IMO, correct layers of clothing, sock combination, hat, gloves, or throw away items as you heat up. Body glide sensitive areas (around collar, waist, nipples, arms, any part of the body where clothing may rub).

Don’t forget to hydrate. Even though it’s raining, you still need to DRINK.

Best of Luck, Enjoy, and you’ll have a wonderful experience.

I guess you’re referring to the Myrtle Beach Marathon. I’m running the 1/2 (my first). I was hoping that the rain would hold off until later but looks like it will begin around 5am.

I’ll probably dress as planned for a dry race. Maybe wear thinner socks to absorb less water. I’ll also put on a hat/visor to keep the rain off my face. I may take a cheap pair of glasses that I can discard if the rain drops on them drive me nuts.

The last time I ran in the rain it was an 8-miler and no socks/glasses/hat. I didn’t have any skin issues.

Interested to see the other responses, though.

I did IMLP last year in the rain:

Smartwool socks plus SportWax on/be the toes, on the arch and achilles heel. No blisters. Tie the shoes fairly tight so nothing slides around.

You may have a love/hate relationship with the glasses, so be prepared to store them in they get fogged-up (if you’re brave, try rain-x). I’ve always had to ditch them in these situations.

Lube anything else that could rub. Wear something that you can ditch at or shortly after the start.

You’ll be fine and end up doing very well - don’t worry about it.

I ran the Denver marathon two years ago and it rained the whole time and probably didn’t get over 40. If I knew it was going to be like that I would have worn tights rather than running shorts, for comfort and warmth. Would also have gone with a better quality shirt. I did have cheap gloves and hat that I would have thrown if it had warmed up, but it didn’t.

I don’t wear socks for rainy marathons - yep, lots of body glide. And minimal, snug clothing, so that it won’t flop around all over you. Good luck!

Do me a favor and capture some cell phone video of when you go down to the surgical ward and ask for some tape for your nipples.

(The OP works in a hospital.)

I go for the $$$ fancy socks. Wear them once to make sure they are comfortable – even if just for a little 3-mile spin around the block. I like Nike dri-fit socks.

I can’t speak to the skin issue - I think everyone reacts differently. But after running two IM marathons in the rain, I would be more concerned with staying warm. Not sure what the weather will be like, but being wet and cold is miserable. That being said, just enjoy the experience as best you can no matter what the circumstances.

been to the surgical unit… they referred me to an adult store and told me to ask for pasties… I guess I should have never told them of my intentions!!!

thanks for the replies… they’ve been most helpful.
