Rain, rainrain and a big training ride

It was 80 degrees in Auburn, ca. today. Went swimming in the lake in the backyard. Did have to put a wetsuit on though. Was not 89 degrees like it was this summer. I do have my Velotron in my room now. Just need one more cable before I can try it out. Rain, what is rain? Or snow, or ice, or huricanes?

I like rain . Nothing like 35 and rain. NO fenders a flat tire and bonking on the same ride. Oh and droping the cell phone it gets wet and i can’t call home for help. My fixed gear is geared to tall for the freshing winds. With my wallet lost near the house with the 3 big and mean dogs I passed a hour ago. Give me northen ny. I will never bitch about the weather.

Thom Ride in the rain or never ride.

I would just say that it seems like you are investing too much mental capital on one workout…one workout, even if this was supposed to be your toughest one of the buildup, is NOT the key to success here…do what you can do, given your equipment and the conditions…and don’t worry about whether this altering your IM fitness…you’ll be fine.

As for me, I’ll be out in the slop for a 2.5 hour run later this morning…muddy trails…I haven’t done that in a while…should be fun!

Just as riding in the rain builds mental toughness, so does riding indoors on a trainer for 4.5 hours! I say stay safe, turn on your favorite music or movie, and get the job done. I have been doing several CT rides lately in preparation for IMFL. You’ll be surprised at how effective riding on a trainer will be. You won’t be the only one doing an indoor ride today as I will be doing the CompuTrainer IMFL bike course. I figure I’ve got plenty of sports on TV to choose from with college football and the baseball playoffs. Good luck!

Don’t knock the trainer. Last week I did one of my 112 rides inside. I’m slower than you fast guys…I’m at 16mph…so, that comes out to be 7 hours for me…I rode 6 hours and 55 minutes…it can be done. I used 4 Spinervals, Tough Love, Mental Toughness, Aerobase 1 and Bending Crank Arms. No off the bike squats though…I just stayed in the big gear and climbed.

If you stay inside, just make it a quality ride. I’ve had plenty of real ride time this year but hitting the trainer for a long last ride felt pretty good. Plenty of specific drill work that I don’t always get outside. And the mental training part is off the charts. Really…come to the dark side! It’s a little taste of insanity.

Stay inside. It’s safer, you still get a sweat and god forbid, this is IMF so the steady pace on the trainer helps a lot more than going outside in the rain. Heck, had to do my 3 hr Trainer steady pace ride this morning for GFT. It definately wasn’t fun but well worth the 3 hrs. Of course had to switch movies but that’s fine nonetheless

I hope you went for it and rode. (unless there was lightning)

I did 3hrs today, it ranged from “this is almost pleasant” to “this is almost miserable” and back again, several times, mostly depending on the severity of the rain or wind. Had I not gotten a late start (and/or had an impatient wife waiting at home) I woulda stayed out for another hour.

I even saw 2 other riders out in Harriman (as opposed to the several dozen you’d normally see on a typical Fall weekend day), so it’s not like I was the only one stupid/brave enough to do so. The things I do to avoid having to do a long ride on the trainer…

Now, running in the monsoon yesterday, that was actually kinda fun. In a stupid way, but fun.
