I don’t have a PM and I am torn between SRM and the Quarq Cinqo. This is likely a dumb question but are both of these PMs able to “press start
and go”? Some indicate that a calibration is needed (e.g. spinning the wheel backwards several revolutions–not sure where I read that). I assume that both of these systems can be set up before the race then are good to go when you get on your bike after t1 and hour or so later. Can anybody comment on your experience using either system in as race?
I have the wireless SRM DA w/ PC VI. Yes, it requires calibration before you ride. I always calibrate in T1, just before heading down to the swim. You spin the crank backward to get the zero offset. During the race, you simply jump on the bike and go.
I used it last year at IMLP and IMWI. It worked great. No issues. Absolutely love it.

I have no experience with the Quarq.
To ZERO the offset on Quarq Cinqo (NOT “calibrate”…there’s a difference) all you have to do is pedal backwards 4 complete cycles. You can do that at ANY time.

Do you need to zero the offset before every ride, though?

Probably not…I *do, *however, through the Garmin before every ride, but that’s mostly because I got in the habit of doing it when I first was given the proto CinQo Saturn to try out. That said, I never see if off by more than 10-20 “points” from the previous value…which by my calcs would result in only ~0.5W error at 90 rpm.
It only takes a couple of seconds, so I figure “Why not?” It’s just a part of turning on the Garmin to me
For Quarq: can you turn on the Garmin & spin the cranks backward to zero out the unit then rack the bike before the race?
For SRM: same as above except no garmin to worry about?
Not that 5-10 sec in T1 is going to affect me as my A races are HIMs and IMs, but I would prefer not to have to mess with anything in T1. What do you do if you forget to do this in T1? I assume you can just spin the cranks backwards to set the zero while riding.
