Racing Norman Stadler over the weekend

I remember you going by in a white streak. Before you there were a succession of riders that would go by me on the hills only to blow at the top. I would ride past them nice and steady and eventually leave them behind.

Not so in your case. You went by me fast and stretched out the rubber band fast enough that I just decided to let you go. Fortunately, I was able to ride pretty much traffic free the whole way and didn’t have to surge and slow until a couple guys caught me right at the end.

I suppose we have sort of met now since I said to you “Nice ride” and you said something in return that I don’t recall. You did have a look on your face that said the fun was over.

Good race.

Chad

Who’s trying to intimidate? I didn’t even mention my times or my place.

PM NC is going to be twice as long, so that adds a whole new set of variables. My last attempt at it ended dismally as I walked up the final hill last year at PM Alabama and dropped about 10 places in my age group in half a mile. Doug ran by me (he started in wave 10 minutes after mine) and yelled “Welcome to long course duathlon” in a cheery voice. Hopefully this will go a little better.

Desert Dude said he knew a couple people in the area so he may be able to find us a homestay. That would make the cost of the trip a lot more reasonable for me. I’ll let you know as soon as I can.

Chad

Mike,
One of your boys who transplanted out east here had a good race this weekend as well…
Bobby James won 35-39 AG at the Kinetic 1/2 IM. Good on him. We’ve been kicking each other’s asses on the bike all winter. All in all, sounds like a lot of good racing this weekend.

Just make sure I know where to pick you up on Saturday…

B

yeah, Bobby had a great race! He did just like I had hoped and held off a bit on the bike and unleashed that run strength.

thanks Chad, you got me on the second run though, as did many others. Not normal for me, the run used to be my strength, or at least on par with the bike. Those hills, as are most are all about having the right gears so you can stay down aero and spin up them. The one big climb I was able to still spin up it at 85rpm’s down in the aero bars holding 22 up it.

Hope I didn’t say anything rude when you commented

I don’t think I did, the only bad comments that came out of my mouth during the race was asking the one guy during the first run if he didn’t mind sharing the road after he bumped into me twice. This was going up the hill to the turn around and there wasn’t anyone else near us, not like there wasn’t room. Then when Jaylew went by, I called him something nasty, which I’m sure he realized I was joking.

Wouldn’t it be a treat if we had a race that big around her about once a month!!

I was very interested at the riding technique of a couple of guys who passed me (momentarily) on the hills. Once guy especially, chugged by me out of the seat grinding about 60 rpm while I was sitting and spinning an easy 90. I passed him for the last time on the last hill up the turn and never saw him again. Maybe riding with a power meter has taught me that you should keep your butt on the seat and keep the spin going. I only had a 44x21 and that was fine on all but one hill.

They have posted the splits for the civilians and you took two minutes out of me on the ride. Since I rode 23.6 for the 29K you must have been flying. The number 4 ride of the day. My ride time looks like it would have put me about number 20 for the day, but I would be willing to bet that some of those people who rode faster were part of the packs that I saw at the turnaround.

Jaylew wasn’t too far behind you when it came to smokin’ the bike course.

For the second week in row I ran a lonely run since you were the one and only guy I passed on the entire second run beyond the two or three guys I ate up going through and just out of T2. It is pretty hard to push the pain threshhold when you know it won’t change anything but a few seconds of your time.

I wish we did have a race like that every month. I might give up swimming for good and be well rid of it.

Chad

It looks like they included both transitions on the bike. Hey, Chad what kind of bike do you ride and were you wearing a black or red top?

The splits are up for military too, btw.

Especially when Jaylew went by laughing at me.

Hey! I didn’t laugh at you!!

Looks like your bike split was 12 seconds faster than mine. I could have sworn I was gaining on you the last few miles as I could see you just up ahead for the last 4 miles or so. Must have gotten me in the transitions

Jaylew,

I suspect it will be easier to remember me as the guy riding the PowerCranks and doing the occasional one-legged recovery pedaling. I have a blue Yaqui with a disc. I was wearing a conehead Louis Garneau TT helmet as well and the red desoto Marines top.

I just crunched the numbers and I know exactly who you are because we traded back and forth for the last 5K into transition and entered within a second of each other. You were tall and rode the bike with the Rotorcranks. We ran out of transition together.

Nice race. You ran pretty darn even run splits for someone who hammered the bike.

Chad

Yeah, I figured you were the Yaqui guy. You’ve got a strange ‘hitch’ in your pedal stroke, if I recall. Maybe it was the Powercranks? You really smoked me on the runs - you were flying! Both my runs were about 30-40 seconds from where they should have been, but I still wouldn’t have been able to run with you. Nice job!

Chad,

were you the guy running on his toes the whole way?

<< but I would be willing to bet that some of those people who rode faster were part of the packs that I saw at the turnaround.

yeah, I just did some quick math with the splits and it seems like there were a lot of people that came in with a combined time in the 64:30 - 64:50 range.

<< Looks like your bike split was 12 seconds faster than mine.

ooohhhh, the small victories are so important these days

maybe we should call it even on the Jack Daniels, we can buy each other a drink next time out.
