Racing Norman Stadler over the weekend

On Saturday I drove to Camp Pendleton, Calif. to race the Devil Dog Duathlon and went into the race with some aspiration to compete for the win based off last year’s winning time. I arrived early enough to get everything set up and then headed over to the start line. As I was walking over, I noticed a small, fit looking woman who sure looked like Heather Fuhr. She was talking to a guy wearing a hat who was also rather nondescript until he raised his head and his face looked pretty familiar.

The more I looked at him the more sure I became that it was Norman Stadler, of all people. Sure enough they announce him before the race and off we go. After about two minutes it became clear no one was going to pass him, so off I went. I immediately acquired a tail of two very fast UC San Diego guys with Stadler in tow. After about a mile the UCSD guys pushed the pace and we started up the hill on a dirt trail to the first 5K turnaround. As they started to pull away and I look down to see my heart rate at 184, a couple of things became clear to me–first, Stadler’s apparent relaxed form made it clear that he was a Porsche idling in second while the economy cars around him were redlining, and second, if I wanted a picture coming into T1 with Stadler I would have to throw away my race and run the first split like an open 5K.

Thankfully my good sense prevailed and I let them go, though I did manage to run into transition before he rolled out.

Once out on the bike I concentrated on the race and forgot about Stadler until we approached the turnaround and he came flying down the hill I was climbing, already about 2K ahead of me. I had averaged better than 25 mph to that point and he was already 3-4 minutes up in less that 14K of riding.

It was awesome.

From T1 to the end of the race he put seven minutes into me and didn’t look to be straining when he passed going the other direction on the final run.

Fuhr came rolling into the finish less than two minutes behind me, so I guess I should be glad the race wasn’t any longer, or I’m sure he would have toasted me too.

What a great sport we all participate in.

P.S. I was shocked at a duathlon that had more than 400 finishers. It was huge. For whatever reason this year’s field was incredible. Last year there were six racers under 1:25. This year there were 24, including Stadler’s 1:14:30, which beat out the previous best time by six or so minutes. Incredible.

P.P.S. Stadler seemed very down to earth and friendly. I couldn’t help but compare him to some of our Big Three sports superstars who make 10 million or more a year and get in trouble all the time. Stadler didn’t stick around for the awards ceremony, but I they said he had an appointment at a local boys and girls club.

it’s bc they wanted to race a stud like you. Forget that Nooman guy.

Send me that info, I have some stuff sketched out for you. No major changes just some tweaking.

That’s a great story…

I’m sure more than a few people will be glued to NS performance at Wild Flower. Should be a heck of a race.

I really enjoyed my race down at the Devi Dog Du. And I agree it was quite impressive watching Stadler move so quickly and with such apparent ease.
While the first 5-10 racers were riding legit, it seemed like a pack of 10-15 cyclist formed behind them and just kept swallowing up riders all the way back to the transition. Quite frustrating, as they just pulled away on the eastbound road back to transitions and then I was only able to run down a handfull of them in the second 5k. Did you happen to see any of this?
A great race though, and I will be back next year. I am lucky that there are still some races in SoCal that are affordable to the student.

Hammer On,

noah

I was at that race as well. This is the 2nd year I have done the race and it was superb. I agree that the competition was much stiffer this year. Last year I went 1:25:20 and was 7th overall, this year 1:23:45 for 15th.

My only complaint was the drafting on the bike. I was passed by a group of 8-10 riding as a pack. As they were approaching me I kept thinking “I hope this is just a group ride that got caught up in our race.” As they passed me I “reminded” them of the drafting rules, to which they chuckled, joked and continued riding as a group. I was able to pass most of them on the 2nd run, which is some consolation.

Was awesome to see the likes of Stadler and Fuhr out there. She smoked me coming out of T2. Those UCSD guys were pretty hot-shit as well. It was an awesome race, and the weather was B-E-A-U-T-F-U-L.

that’s a great story.

2 years ago at a local duathlon (run/bik/run/bike/run) here in rochester, ny, i raced alongside (sort of), travis kuhl and desire ficker. this was a tiny duathlon with less than 100 people and it had 2 top pro duathletes. it was pretty cool. man, desiree has some large, muscular thighs. momma!

Desiree is seriously hot, though. I passed her on the run at Alcatraz in '04 and thought about seeing if she would race to the finish for a date. But then I thought she just might kick my butt right there on the course, so I kept my mouth shut…

Yeah right Rappstar,

You chickened out! Now Kate Major on the other hand… Maybe it’s just because she looks like my college “one that I let get away” but she’s a cutie…

I was there too. I was surprised at the turnout. 426 competitors and chip timing at a du in Cali? Terrific! You’re right about the times being faster. I came really close to the time I was shooting for, but it didn’t get me near the place I expected.

Heather Fuhr actually went down on the 1st run. She was right in front of me and it was a bit congested that 1st 1/4 mile and some guy right in front of her took her out. She was fairly scraped up from what I saw, but still won easily. Normann was flying but looked effortless on the run!

They’ve got the initial results up, but I’m anxious to see the splits they’re going to post in a day or so, especially Normann’s.

I also heard about the small pack, but I didn’t see it. I guess they were behind me. Unfortunately I think I may have gotten passed by a couple of those guys on the 2nd run. No complaining though, I was slow on the run anyway - apparently I have no foot speed right now.

Two guys were actually discussing it afterwards. Roughly:

1st guy to 2nd guy: I saw you in the pack, but I wasn’t able to get in it. I knew I wasn’t going to beat you then.

2nd guy: We were really moving. We just kept picking people up.

1st guy: Yeah, you’ve really got to get in the pack, you save so much energy.

Me: But that would be cheating.

1st guy: Nah, not really. You would do it too if you had the chance.

Me: Uh, no I wouldn’t. That’s cheating.

1st guy: (mumbles something in a French or Belgian accent)

Me: Incredulous, I go tell Plumb about the conversation.

There was a bit more of him supporting his viewpoint but I don’t remember what he said.

Did anyone else notice that their official time was about 35 seconds off of their watch time? My watch said 1:22:02 and results say 1:22:39. Place is right though…

My posted time on the website is pretty much spot-on with my watch.

There was one guy who I saw drafting off Heather Fuhr, and anyone else he could latch onto on the way out, also joined the pack. He was easy to remember because he had a maroon Zoot suit on. We went back and forth on the run and I was able to overtake him with about 400m to go and held him off. He came up to me afterward and offered me his had and a congratulations. I just looked at him and said “Dude, you were drafting the whole f-ing race” and walked away disgusted. He looked at me as if I were from another planet. What a LOSER!!

“Maroon Zoot suit”

Eeeeuuuuuwwwwwww.

I would say your conversation was pretty unbelievable, but last week at the Palm Springs tri I had pretty much the same experience.

Saturday there were not too many people in front of me on the bike, but when I made the turnaround I was shocked at the size of some of the packs. I think it was really a big advantage on the way out because the speed was so high and there was a headwind.

There are just people out there that think that if you don’t get caught then drafting is fine. I heard an announcement that there would be race officials monitoring the ride, but I saw none. I thought the mass start was kind of cool, but is guess you just can’t put that many riders on a bike course without some of them succumbing to the temptation of drafting.

What amazes me are the people that seriously draft off a single person. There is a difference between a pack not obeying the 10m rule, and some guy stuck 3 inches behind your wheel. They are both cheating, but I think that some people are so flagrant it is scary. Not much of a contribute with this post… just venting… sorry…

it certainly was an interesting race. Great to see such a huge turnout for a duathlon in SoCal, a shame it wasn’t sanctioned or at the very least had some officiating. Personally I had a decent race. I can’t run worth a damn on those uneven dirt surfaces, it just kills my bad knee, feels like someone driving a nail into my knee with every foot strike. I must have been about 30th at the end of the first run. But once on the bike I caught fire and averaged right at 25mph for the whole ride to come off the bike in 4th place overall. Over the last couple of miles on the bike I kept sneaking a glance back and could see a line of a couple of guys back there about a quarter mile, but couldn’t tell exactly how close they were together. At the turn around, I also saw that pack starting to form. It sucked big time watching guys flow by me on the final run and there was nothing I could do about it as each step sent a wave of pain through the knee. Especially when Jaylew went by laughing at me. I know a handful of those guys were in the drafting pack but not much you can do about that at this point. Still finished 11th overall, just managed to hold off Heather Fuhr at the line

Anyone that was unhappy about the drafting should write to the race director and recommend that they should have some draft marshalls on the course for next year. That and have at least two waves for that many people.

Just sent them an email about an hour ago. Hoping they will have some marshalls at the Oly distance in July. A number of the offenders in the pack I saw were from a specific, yet unnamed group. I also sent an open letter to that group, not that it will likely do any good. But it made me feel better.

Desiree is seriously hot, though. I passed her on the run at Alcatraz in '04 and thought about seeing if she would race to the finish for a date. But then I thought she just might kick my butt right there on the course, so I kept my mouth shut…

You got that right. Hottest Pro going IMHO

Go to IM Arizona, search under last name.

Sorry Desiree, but we can’t help it, it’s in our genetic wiring.

I say out them right here and now

Until drafting is made completely socially unacceptable to do, there will always be assholes that think it is alright to do.

Sorry Mike, we were distracted by the discussion of Desiree.

Yeah, you’re right Death to ALL Drafters!

I’m going to wait to see what kind of reaction I get from the team. If it’s no reaction or a negative one then I’ll out them.

You know this gives me an idea…

You’re not succeeding in intimidating me for PM NC this weekend, Chad…

Now, if I can pull off a Stader-esque “cruise control” race like you describe…(everyone insert their favorite uproarious laugh at this point)
