Races in/near Los Angeles in first half of 2012

I am trying to figure out my race schedule for next year, but most of the on-line calendars (including the Slowtwitch one) are pretty sparse for 2012. Plus, I haven’t found a site yet that lets me search by distance from my house. So I was wondering if any of you could help me determine what is out there. We have a second baby due in late June, so I want to try to get in a bunch of races before then.

What I care about:
Distance from my house - with a pregnant wife and a 20 month old at home, I am going to have to drive out race morning. I live in Torrance, so that pretty much rules out most of the San Diego / Santa Barbra races unless they are really worth getting up at 3 AM
Bike safety - I not confident in my bike handling when I am going all out in my aerobars. This means that I try to avoid things like sprint tris that have 3 loops on narrow one lane roads so that by the third loop I am passing people going 15 mph slower weaving all over the place and don’t know how to stay right. I’m looking at your Hermosa.
Price - The cheaper the better
On-road - I don’t have a MTB
Packet pick-up - weird to have as a primary consideration, but if I a race is over an hour away, I don’t want to have to drive down the day before just to get my timing chip and drive back.

What I don’t care about:
Distance - I slightly prefer longer, but will race anything
Spectacle - I don’t need anything fancy or a huge party. I’m there to race, not listen to music and eat fine foods. I could care less about shirts or medals.

These are the races that I have seen so far sort of listed in order of interest. Any feedback on them would be great.
Redondo Beach Sprint - June 10, .5 mi. swim/ 6 mi. bike/ 2 mi. run, $65 now (with code), $90 later. Little short even for a sprint, but cheap and close. I did this race last year and the bike course was fine.
**UC Irvine Sprint - ** Feb 11, 400 m swim/ 12 bike / 5k run, probably $75. Pool swim, new unknown bike course this year
**USC Tri – **cancelled for 2012
**UCLA tri - **no date yet, 400 m swim / 13.5 mi bike / 5k run, probably $75, Pool swim, split transitions, 4 loop bike
LA tri series #1 – April 15, 500?m swim / 24?k bike/ 5? mi run, $110 now/ $? later
LA tri series #2 – May 12, 1k swim / 26.1k bike / 8k run, $115 now / $? later
**LA tri series #3 **– June 9, 1k swim / 39k bike / 10k run, $120 now / $? later
**Race the Base Reverse – **Feb 25, 3.7 mi run, 13.1 mi bike / 200m swim, $70 now / $80 later, very short pool swim
**Pasadena Reverse **– March 10, 5k run / 15k bike / 150m swim, $85 now / $95 later, very short pool swim, 3 loop bike
**Strawberry Fields – **April 22, 1/3 mi swim / 14.5 mi bike / 5k run, $95 now, $110 later, a little far but a later start helps
Big Rock – April 14, 1.5k swim / 40k bike/ 10k run, $100 now / $? Later, 2 loop bike. I did this one, it was fun and low key, but a little far.
Superseal – March 18, 1.5k swim / 40k bike / 10k run, $130 now + $15 check in fee, too far away for me
Orange Country – May 20, 1.5 k swim / 40k bike / 10k run, $160 now / $180 later +$30 for race day packet pickup
Oceanside 70.3 – March 31, Soldout

I’ve done a couple of the LA Tri races out in San Dimas. Well organized and fun races. Lake Bonelli isn’t the best, but other than that good times…

Also forgot to mention the Camp Pendleton Sprint Tri August 4. Challenging ocean swim (depending on the surf) and great bike coarse on the base. Overall a great, well organized race!!

Thanks, what is the bike course like for the San Dimas races? Hilly, technical, rough, smooth, crowded, narrow?

I just did the Turkey Tri there (Which is a great race for November by the way!) and the first lap of the bike was awesome (granted I was in the first wave) but the second lap got pretty crowded.

The bike is mostly rollers, a couple fast downhills and a couple short uphill efforts. Parts of the coarse you have the whole road, and a couple sections just the bike lane. Road is in good condition, and police at a couple of intersections. No cars to really worry about, and since it is a loop coarse there is some crowding in a few areas.

Organizers have done these races in San Dimas for a long time. Good grass roots feel, and very well organized.

+1 on the Camp Pendleton Sprint.

From Torrance it’s probably a little over an hour away (with no traffic). Packet pickup is day of, well organized, safe/single loop bike course, and very well priced (for a SoCal event). By well organized, I’d say it’s one of (if not the most) organized races locally.
The only criteria it doesn’t meet is that it’s not in the first half of 2012.

I’ve always wanted to do that race, but something has gotten in the way. We’ll see how much sleep I am getting at that point.

Thanks, I was looking at the Piru races and maybe the POLA’s, but I don’t know anything about TTs. What exactly to they mean by racing in the “public” category? Are wheelcovers allowed? I assume that I have to wear a sleeved jersey if only not to be laughed at.

Public = non licensed racer (no USA Cycling license)

Here is an intro: Triathlete Primer for Your First Time Trial - The bike leg of triathlon and duathlon is essentially a time trial race sandwiched in between swimming and running.

Wheelcovers are allowed (UCI rules only apply to Masters and Elite nationals, and NRC/pro events)

Sleveless jerseys are now allowed in TT races http://www.usacycling.org/forms/USAC_rulebook.pdf

Depends what you mean by “late June,” but Breath of Life is a nice Oly course at the end of June (was 6/26 last year).

I also have a personal Hermosa embargo. I wish they’d go back to the more open 2 loop format, but I won’t race it again until they change the bike course.

Probably not as the due date is June 25, but it does look like fun.

Add Magic Mountain Man to your list. Its in Santa Clarita, has race morning packet pick-up option, cheap if you register early and use a discount code, and is probably one of the toughest HIMs in the country with 7k+ climbing on the bike and some tough climbs on the run. I’ve done it the past three years.

Um, are you kidding me? No offense, but you live in the ideal place for short-drive to race and high frequency of races being in Socal.

The races you listed are all great options. I don’t think you’ll need more than a few of them - if you’re looking for more, don’t know what you find lacking on those listed races. Most people who don’t live in CA would kill to get even a fraction of those races within their locale in under a 2hr drive.

Congrats on the upcoming baby - and get those race kicks out now - it’s gonna be busy once the baby pops out. Think baby waking up to feed every 3 hours, 24 hrs a day, for nearly 5 months. I recall forcing myself getting onto my bike trainer in a delirious state, which in retrospect wasn’t so productive. Fortunately, it gets a lot better after about 6-7 months but is still challenging.

The problem isn’t not enough races, it is that I don’t know much about the races listed and I need to choose which to do. Just trying to get some feedback to help me decide. At the same time, there might be one or two that I haven’t heard of (like the Breath of Life) because most race calendars are pretty sparse. To make that list, I combined the info from about 4 different calendars.

Second baby, so I know the drill, but this time we will have a two year old to take care of as well. Before I used to be able to squeeze in a trainer ride or short run during nap time, but this time is going to be even tougher.

Do you know if it is going to be in the fall again? I doubt I’ll have a chance to train for it over the summer. But i went to there website and they mention an olympic distance. I might be able to pull that off.

If I do a fall HIM, it will probably be the Big Kahuna again. It is easier then MMM and my mom lives in Santa Cruz. I used the excuse of visiting grandma to convince my wife to let me race there.

It’s normally 2nd weekend in October. They also have the Oly.
