Race Wheel set up For IMAZ disc or no Disc?

Just curious as to what everyone will be riding for IMAZ on 4/13/2008. I have a zipp disc and considering a different wheel because of cross wind??? Any feedback is well appreciated!!

disc
.

Go with a disc. The winds are headwinds, not crosswinds. Virtually all the pros were riding discs last year.

always a disk IMO
.

Going with a disc as well.

Disc. Personally it takes one hell of a cross wind to push me on a disc. I’m more worried about what’s on the front in high winds.

227,
in an effort to give you the best advice, I think your wheel choice needs to be based on 2 major decision criteria.

  • What is your average speed for the 112? Let’s just say, 17.6ish, well then it makes no difference what is back there.
  • How are you built/bodytype? If you are built anythin like the picture below, well then it makes no difference either.

Hit me back with some details and I will give you a more knowledgeable answer.

Wow, you are a brave man indeed … :wink:

I’ve done IMAZ the last three years, twice on an 808 rear and once on the 404. I was going 808 again this year because it’s (a) what I know, and (b) it’s a clincher - which again is what I know.

But, the definitiveness of your response makes me wonder what I’m leaving on the table by going with an 808 vs. disc…can you tell me more?

thanks

You want the crosswinds with a disc.

What is your estimated average speed? Under 18mph I would not use a disc, faster than that go with a disc.

{sigh}

crosswinds are when a disc is most effective…

{shakes head}

It’s not the rear wheel that affects handling, it’s the front…

My 128lb wife would run a disc at IMAZ and not even think twice about it. She’s used a disc at every race since early 2006 and we live(d) in a very windy part of the world (OK & TX).

Do you enjoy sailing as a hobby? How is a crosswind better than a headwind with a disc?

because jonnyo says so

To your response I will def be avg 20+mph at least that is the plan, however that is not my main concern. For me to have a good day on the bike the big question is can a take care of business like this guy pre AZ!!

Carlos, that picture is classic! I thought from the title of the thread that maybe you had posted this. Then I scrolled down and saw that picture and spit water all over my laptop! I’m guessing one of your boys from down south just sold you out!

Good luck…

Keith

Wow. I’ve never actually seen a guy with 2 assholes before.

Umm… lower drag, particularly relative to other wheels.

I do enjoy sailing actually. Lived on a sailboat for 5 years. If I could get my wheel to act as sail and provide some lift I would be pleased as punch.

Isn’t that the claim on the Sub 9 Zipp disc? Negative drag (lift) at some yaw angles? I believe that’s the case.

“Aero” wheels are least effective relative to shallow wheels when the wind is coming from directly in front…

disc all teh way, teh course is fast as heck and a disc will only help more
.

Why would you not use a disk at below 18mph? Wouldn’t a disk be better than a deep wheel at all speeds?

I have a set of Stinger 90s but I’m thinking of putting a wheel cover on the back to turn it into a disk. I’m not doing IMAZ but the Muskoka 70.3.
