Race wheel choice

Ok - sold my bike with my 404’s - new bike decision coming up - both I am considering will come with standard training wheels - which is fine as I don’t need race wheels until the spring and it’s more cash in my pocket now than if I get race wheels on the bike immediately.

So - my question is, given that I want to ride 700c clinchers, what is the recommendation from other slowtwitchers.

I am thinking Renn disc on the rear - still undecided on the front wheel - whether to go deep dish or tri spoke (Hed)

Thoughts?

And please - don’t make this about clinchers v tubulars - my reasoning behind clinchers is sound and I will leave it at that

I’ve been away for awhile. What is the recommended PSI for clinchers these days? When I left it was 115-120-ish, and climbing. The thought two years ago was that it wouldn’t be long before it caught up to tubular PSIs.

The Renn disc/trispoke is a smart choice.

Unless you’re a heavy rider you might also want to pick up two front wheels - a trispoke for calmer days and a moderate dish for windy days. Something like a used Campy Shamal can be had very cheap on ebay as a back up for the trispoke for bad weather conditions. They’re very aero and unaffected by cross winds.

Some clincher tires are rated quite high, up to 150 psi, but some clincher rims are not rated beyond 120-5 psi. But psi is meaningless in and of itself, the real issue is rolling resistance, comfort, and handling. A clincher at 115-120 psi may well have better rolling resistance than a sew up at 140 psi. And running any tire at very high pressures is likely to be a bad idea unless you are racing on perfectly smooth pavement that is almost equivalent to riding on a track.

I have the Renn/H3C combo and really have enjoyed it. The only other front wheel I’d consider would be the Zipp 808 or equivalent if HED makes a deep front. The new Stingers may be able to be a front wheel.

The only disadvantage of the Renn disc is the horizontal flexibility is a little higher than some other discs. In sprints and steep climbs you can feel the rear squirm a bit. For the front I prefer a medium-deep dish like the Spinergy Stealth (was Tilium) or Alps size…45/50mm. With my weight (160lb) the ~60mm depth of a 404 or Jet60 is a bit much in the heavy crosswinds. Not as bad with the disc in place, but I rode last night with the 575 and Jet60 in the gusty winds of T.S. Tammy and it was tiring mentally and physically to keep everything in a straight line.
