Race Walking is the weirdest sport...but they move

In the IAAF World’s women’s 20K race walk, the leader came through 15K at 1:04 and finishes around 1:25. As weird as this sport is, this is sub 3:10 marathon pace. There are likely only a handful on this forum who have ever run an Ironman marathon this fast.

thank you cbc
Thom.

That statement is completely devoid of logic. A 20k race walk and an Ironman marathon are not comparable on any level.

Race walking is hands down the most idiotic “sport” ever conceived. Don’t ever bring it up again except to ruthlessly mock it.

the point is that as crazy and silly as it looks, these athletes are moving quicker than pretty well everyone on this forum running an Ironman marathon. There is some logic to it. You can mock it all you want, but you still can’t go that fast in an Ironman. Even fresh, I bet 80% on this forum can’t run quicker for half marathon or more. These athletes haul ass.

It’s really a 20k, not on Ironman marathon. Apples and oranges so it is illogical to compare them.

I completely disagree on your latter statement. I bet 90% of the people on this forum could run a 20k in well less than 1:25 without even trying.

Race walking is pathetic. “Haul ass”??!?? is that really what you said? You need to raise the bar a little.

Slick your not being to slick. Race walking is hard, and if i had time i dont think i would do it. So if these people are training that much in order to get that good they have a great work ethic. Maybe not smarts, but work ethic, and im sure their legs are built. So Give em a little respect.

Slick I don’t think that 90% of the dudes on this forum can break 1:25 for 20K. That is 1:30 half marathon. As a point of reference I was asked to be the “90 min pace bunny” at our local half marathon in the spring. Check out where I finished overall:

I came through at 129th out of >6000 people. If 90% of the forum can break 1:30, then only ~ 10% finish behind my finish. As studly as people on this forum claim to be, I am not that sure that they represent only the top 2% of the field at your average half marathon

No, that would be NASCAR actually…if you are one that even consider it a sport.

(Bring it on!)

Yeah, I just watched that and worked through the math myself. I initially compaerd it to the 1:12 I took to do the 15km at K-Town last week, and then realized I could think in terms of my best 1/2 marathon, which is 1:36:49. Take away about 4:30 for that 1.1 km difference, and I’m still only at 1:32 for 20km while she’s boppin’ along at 1:25:41. And with perfect technique as well (although I haven’t quite got that figured out…) No, I’m impressed, plain and simple.

Everytime I hear the words “race walk”, I picture the only Malcolm in the Middle episode I’ve ever seen … the dad got into race walking “whole hog” … it was hilarious.

Do you have a link to the race. I have an Olympic caliber racewalker and want to see if she is there.

One day in HS our coach thought it would be fun to have us walk 400s fast. I have never been so sore in my life. It is a funny sport, humans weren’t made to walk fast, when we need to go fast we run. It is closer to Craftsman truck series than nascar. At least the stock cars are made to go fast, trucks are meant to haul things.

Ironman Marathon!!! Hell, running an OPEN half marathon in 1:35 would be pushing it for me.

My walker, Debbie Lawrence, wasn’t there. In fact, there were no americans so I am not sure what the story is. the winner set a WR though.
