Race Review -- Gator Half

I raced the Gator 1/2 IM this past Sunday in Sarasota FL and wanted to share a few thoughts.

  1. This was about as local, friendly and “non WTC” a race as you will ever do. Very low key. 150 racers total. Some speedy folks, but no hard core A holes.
  2. Race Director (and ST poster) Thierry was extremely helpful and thoughtful on behalf of the racers. I can’t imagine he made $100 on this race.
  3. I hadn’t raced in 3 1/2 years and I was surprised by the amount of “go fast” hardware. If you did have a relatively new bike, race wheels and aero helmet, you were in the minority.
  4. Swim was probably a few meters short, but that’s ok with me (and probably others…)
  5. Aid stations didn’t run out on me, and they were staffed with cheerful volunteers.

My only nit-picks were:

  1. More course signage on the bike. I made a wrong turn and biked 2 extra miles. Crap.
  2. Run drinks served in small cups made drinking while running tough. Suggest larger cups next year.
  3. No trash can after bike aid stations.

Overall, this is a great, low key, early season race. People were nice and friendly, Thierry did a great job, course was nice and racing beats training. I will be back next year.

Thanks.

Good to hear positive things about the race. I had planned on doing it this year, but an injury kept me out. I’ll pencil it in for next year!
