Race Report- My return to racing- 1st race in 3 years

I thought quarries were for rocks. What do you mean you can swim in them?! Do you have any pictures?

Have you ever seen the movie ‘Breaking Away’ ? It won an Oscar back in the day, its filmed in Bloomington, about a local kid who wants to race bikes with the Italians. Its a great flick. A few scenes show some of the quarries and the kids swimming in them. Its occasionally shown on AMC or some other cable channel, or you can rent or buy on dvd. Check it out. I’ll also see if I can find some photos to show you.

The quarries are limestone quarries. They blast huge amounts of limestone used for buildings around the world - the pentagon is built fromIndiana limestone. But many of the quarries fill with water. And it takes on a nice blue green tint from the lime. No muddy water like in the midwest lakes, because there is very little mud on the bottom, just rock.

Let’s see if I can find some good photos…

ok, check out this site:

click on the link for abandoned quarries, and you’ll see what many of the quarries, some water filled, look like.

I’d still watch Breaking Away - its a great movie, great bike riding scenes, the quarry scene, and lots of laughs.

Great race hasbeenswimmer… I’ve finished 1st in my heat a couple of times there so I might have given you some competition had I showed up…HA!! I did the Flag City sprint tri in Findlay, OH instead…

Logansport is a great swim, definitely the clearest water you’ll find anywhere in northeast Indiana (with maybe clear lake the exception) and your right, the roads on that course can be nasty in spots. Not the greatest course to post a fast bike split.

The run course is great if you like cross country running, I’m not a huge fan but others like it very well…

Hopefully I’ll see you at Warsaw… I’ll be the guy on the P3C with the Spiuk aero helmet!

Here is a pic of the Spoonbill Sturgeon taken from the France Park web site…

That’s really cool! I think the image I had was of you swimming in a cave or something

Quarries are for rock’s up to the very second they dig to deep and “spring” a leak. I hear the France Park quarry filled so fast they could not get all of the equipment, including a train out of the bottom so it was just left there.

Yup the best places to swim and usually warmer than stream fed lakes depending on the spring that feeds it.

Thanks!! As for the competiton if you were first in your heat then I almost certainly would not have been much a threat to you. I use the swim like hell and try not let to many people pass you approach. I had about 6 pass me on the bike and run, I am sure you would have been one of them.

As for Warsaw… I have not signed up yet, we will see how I feel after Elkhart. I am worried racing three weekends in a row will not only hurt like hell but could do damage to my ankle again. I tend to be very cautious. I can tell I am still a bit smoked from last weekend, I did a TT with a local group last nigh 10 miles, I was a only a 28:20 which works out only a little over 21 MPH. In my defense I had 0 warmup, literaly straight out of the van onto my bike and hammer away- I was hurting huge 30 seconds into it and blew up coming back into the wind. Anyhow I hope my legs can recover for Sunday. If i feel good by this time next week I migh have a go at Warsaw, if not then I’ll do the Firecracker sprint in benton Harbor.

If I come to Warsaw I’ll be the slow guy you pass on this bike
