Race or wait?

hi, 67 y.o. Clydesdale. Back of packer. Reading about some of the recent deaths in tri, debating should I wait before doing another sprint after a 2 year layoff. There is no doubt I could FINISH the Lava Rocks sprint on May 30th, but wondering if it’s smart. I could finish as mentioned, and though I’d be hurting during the run, (my worst leg), I wouldn’t be crawling either. I’m in ok tri shape, getting decent medical reports, (BP was 134/80 yesterday) but I am still 20 pounds over my goal weight. I can easily, but slowly do twice the distance of each leg (separately). About two weeks ago, I actually did a 40 min pool swim, half hour Peloton and 45 min run,so I guess I’ve done a tri recently. But on the other hand, I’m torn, why be a hero, maybe continue my training and look to get a little stronger (leaner) for a race later in summer. After reading about some of the deaths, and the fact that I should drop 20 to really be in tri shape, I’m heavily leaning against NOT doing it. I know i’s my personal decision, but I’m curious what others might opine. thanks

If your doctor said you’re good to go, I’d let ‘er rip. Doing a triathlon isn’t supposed to be easy.

Most deaths come in the swim from folks that are competing, so if you just take it easy and use the swim as a warm up for the next two events, you shouldn’t have any issues there. Other than that, do you want to do the race? Sounds like you are ready to get back into racing, so may as well crack the seal and get that first race under your belt, then go forward with all the things you can do better in the next one..

you both now have me feeling better about doing it… I think I’ll do a good, long swim today and make an assessment afterward. Thanks
