Do most of you use a race belt to wear your race number on the bike since for IM it is required on your back?

Always. Then you just spin it around for the run.

What other choices are there? LOL.
Once the best idea is found, just go with it, and stop staring at your own navel.
Agreed. However, they give you two numbers (one with first name and one with last name). I have seen people with one number pinned on the back of their bike jersey and one pinned on the front of their running singlet/shirt. I have also seen people wear the same top for bike and run and have both numbers pinned on the entire time (one front and one back).
It should be noted they did not distribute safety pins at IMMoo this year – likely to avoid this fashion faux pas …

huh? you referring to having one number. on the back and one on the front?

Yes…I have a pink one I am willing to lend to you.

Yes – having two numbers safety pinned on the jersey at the same time – was the joke at registration today. Not that there is anything wrong with that look, except for the fact that you cannot justify the added weight from all those safety pins … ![]()
bigger faux pas would be rock up with your $5k carbon aero bike with internal cable routing, deep front & disc rear, dimpled 19mm tubs, shaved legs & arms, alien lid & bjorn-esque position…and have your number flapping about behind you on your race belt
to each their own of course…
Why is it required for IM? I hate wearing a race number on the bike…
agreed. judging by the number of numbers littering the bike course at imc, i’d say you’d easily get away without one. you could always claim that it got ripped off.

In case you incur a penalty (e.g., drafting, passing on wrong side, etc.), the marshall can easily see your number and can mark it (if necessary).
use the number with your first name. always a nice boost especially during the marathon to have people give encouragement with your first name.
They do give you 2 numbers, usually one with your first name, the other with your last name. Typically you only need to only use one of them and you get to choose which one.
I usually prefer the one with my first name and try to use it throughout the bike and the run with a race belt. Wear it on my back during the bike and on the front during the run. I do keep the one with my last name on another race belt and keep it in my bike to run bag. This way if the first one gets lost I have the backup one for the run.

Don’t remember which IM video it was, but a race official gave a female pro a 3min (?) stand by your bike penalty for not having her number. All her crying that the wind ripped it off didn’t seem to faze the official. Having said that, I watched pelotons’ pass me at IMC this year with officials nearby and they did nothing. 2600 people for an IM is way too many!
And body marking is for???
I’ve always pinned one number to the front of my race jersey (that I wear under my wetsuit for most IMs so it is on me from start to finish), then use the race belt so that I have a number on the back during the bike, then ditch the race belt entirely for the run since I hate running with it on and already have a number pinned to the front of my jersey.
When I raced Kona in 2004 it was very windy and I don’t think that my number on the race belt last much past halfway. After about 80 miles of biking I finally realized that it was not flopping around on my back.
And body marking is for???
Well, at IMMoo last year, my guess would be – tradition? Those who were prepared had sleeves covering the body marking. Those who were not, had garbage bags or no more markings after several hours in the rain…
However, my race number (and race belt) held up just fine. ![]()
True. I still have both of my race numbers from last year they are both tattered, splattered and smeared… In that weather, not much holds up.
I chose to pin mine on the back of my jersey for the bike and for the run I added my racebelt for the front. I read Coggan’s comment about the number flapping and decided I needed every mental advantage possible just to finish and not drive myself crazy with negative self talk. I wish you could just wear the number on the rear for the run as well. then I wouldn’t have to have the stupid number flapping on the front. For my next I may glue one on front and back. We’ll see.
This sport is obsessed with marking stuff. I did a race a while ago where I had 12 separate forms of markings/identifiers. That way, if you drown and are eaten by a shark they’ll be able to extract some race number from the shark poo.
