Race food

despite any previous ideas ive had, chicken on a stick is not a good meal for the day before a race, especially if its at a fair. Ive learned my lesson only after going to the bathroom 6 times in the last 90 mins. and missing my race (im not ruining that new airone saddle)

A few years back I went to the wedding of one of my wife’s coworkers the day prior to a race. He is East Indian so the food served was very spicy with lots of curry… the food was awesome and I ate too much. I managed to race the next day but with more pitstops prior, during and after the race than I’ve ever experienced before. Live and learn

Call me crazy, but my favorite pre/post race meals are Hardee’s Thickburgers and Chicago style pies.

-I luv u, I luv u, and I luv u!

Personally I have had good luck with waffles and french toast the day before.

This year I want to try baklava for race day breakfast.

My thinking is that it is calorie dense, not fibrous, or spicy and full of carbohydrates with some good fats too boot.

I was also pondering using redbull, or some concotion of redbull for races this year.

It tastes good enough, has the caffeine, vitamins, and carbs and only lacks some protein which I would like to get in a race drink.

I’m still not decided on what solid food I will take on the bike this year.

I like power bars but they aren’t the easiest thing to consume while staying aero. Perhaps a cliff bar or maybe I will just have a hey day in the candy isle trying to pick a winner.

I’d love to hear other ideas.

Just got back from the Joe Friel Seminar it was awesome! He had a good hour by hour nutrition break down for racing, I will include that in tomorrows post on the seminar. But some of the pre-race basic were

Eat 2-4 hours before a race

Consume nothing in the last hour except water

10 min before start have sports drink or gu and water

eat primarily carbohydrates with a moderate glycemic load

the print on my hand out is tiny I will post the rest later. Joe has a new book on endurance nutrition for athletes coming out, he doesn’t know when it will be released but is due to the publisher in june.

Jim,

I will look forward to your post/update. I missed the seminar because of a club time trial in the morning and the desire to see Ben Serrota and test ride an Ottrott in Hazel Park in the afternoon. I care for two Serotta bicycles BTW.

Thanks for offering to pass on some of the info you learned in the seminar. This is one of the reasons I enjoy Slowtwitch. Very knowledgeable people, great information, and the willingness and desire of so many to help others get up “the curve” without letting them suffer all the same mistakes.
