I’m looking to organize a low-key indoor triathlon at my place of employment sometime next spring (March-ish).
I have a pool, bikes (if you could call them that), and treadmills all at my disposal.
Is there anyone out there with a little experience with these matters? I’d like to get some advice and discuss possible pitfall, obstacles, and things I haven’t considered-but should.
I’m not a Race Director, but I have done a race similar to your description. The race director timed us individually (swim, indoor bike and treadmill) and at the end of the month, the person with the fastest time won.
i’ve been a part of an annual Y birthday tri for a friend. We show up early and at the sound of “go” we swim 10 laps, transition in the locker room, jump on stationary bikes (the ones with the digital courses/tvs in front - we all select the same route) to do 12 miles or so, then transition to treadmill for a 5k run. We time ourselves and go by overall time (splits are up to you).
Limitations are the number of those bikes available. You can do waves, or for some alter the sequence so some swim and run first which will allow the first group enough time to get off the bikes.
Our local Y organized a 20-20-20 event last winter. It was different in that it was based on how far you got in 20 minutes in the pool, on a stationary bike, and on a treadmill. Just 5 minutes allowed between events. Only 36 people participated, We were divided into three waves. I can’t imagine having anymore people, as it would have drug on all day. The logistics of planning space in/on available equipment made it less of a gathering and more of a personal test. Still cool.
