Race day strategy

i was thinking about this on the way back from my mountain bike race this afternoon and was curious as to the strategy ya’ll take on race day? personally, it’s not really about beating the field, as i dont really know too many people i compete against (except for a few friends) tho there is the occasional person i’ll kinda duke it out w/ and leapfrog down the whole course w/ creating a race amongst ourselves. however, most of my strategy is to kinda turn inward and become a sort of tachometer and fuel gauge, measuring how hard i’m going and how much fuel is left in the tank. do others also take this strategy? or is it more of a look at where you want to attack the course, and where you want to recover? or other?

Well, for me it depends on the race. Typically I try to be consistent through the bike and swim. The run, my background, I race the course, powering the tops of hills, out of corners. Actually, I try a little of this on the bike. I also pick people in front of me and try to put them behind me, especially on a flat, open course. My first tri last year was a swim, run, bike, run. since it was a sprint, I basically didn’t save anything for the second 1.5 mi. run. Just raced the first three sections, then let the last mile and half take care of itself. Mostly the last mile I finish on willpower (for lack of a better word).

thats just me
