Every morning I kick start my day with a cup of freshly brewed coffee. On race day mornings it’s hard to have access to a good coffee maker, or beans unless I bring my own. That means settling on having a crappy coffee before the race. I’m not a fan…
When lodging with friends I noticed that on race day morning everyone got their way of making coffee. Some do instant coffee mixes, others buy a cup in the evening and reheat it in the morning. Sometimes we get a luxury of brewing a fresh cup, but what if there is no coffee maker, filters or grounds?
Over the years, I’ve found a simple and convenient solution: “Cold Brew in a Mug” method.
There are so many ways to have a great race day morning coffee, so please share your tips so we can learn from each other!
I always bring a can of High Brew black cold brew coffee with me and put it in the fridge cold and ready for race morning. First thing I drink in the morning with my bagel
Anyone who thinks reheating coffee is okay is absolutely out of their mind.
I travel with an aeropress and a hand grinder. So long as I have access to hot water, I’m generally okay. While it won’t be the ideal temperature for the brew, I’ll sacrifice. I need hot coffee in the AM, so cold brew wouldn’t really work for me, at least I don’t feel like it would.
Do you heat up your cold brew in the microwave (I do), or just drink it cold from the fridge?
I’m impatient and stupid when it comes to food so I burn my mouth on hot coffee, soup, etc etc so I just drink it cold.
I need to save my patience for the course
Hilarious! I too am impatient and stupid with food. Once I was running late to load in for a show so I grabbed a frozen burrito from a gas station and partially thawed it using the heat vents on my truck’s dashboard.
My usual coffee is all accomplished with a power grinder and pour-over method. My emergency coffee is instant coffee packets from Starbucks. Plenty of caffeine and tastes fine with half & half.
I definitely always go with either a french press or pour over! The pour over is easy, all you need is some ground coffee, a paper filter, the plastic pour over cone (easy to pack in a suitcase), and hot water.
I travel with either an aeropress or french press and then a container of coffee I grind at home or my hand grinder, depending on how long I’m going to be away from home.
A little tip for getting your coffee made ahead of time, especially if you’re sleeping in your own bed the night before. If you have something like a Stanley Thermos, before you go to bed fill it with hot water, the hotter the better. My tap water starts steaming pretty quick so I just use that to preheat the thermos. Fill the thermos and let it set while you make however much coffee you need for the next day. When the coffee is done replace the hot water in the thermos with hot coffee. When you wake up in the morning the coffee will still be nice and warm, at least it is in my Stanley Thermos.
I’m the guy who use instant coffee if I travel for the race. I make it thick, sweet and hot and drink till before the the transition closes. Hot water is usually available at a hotel, airbnb and whatnot, so easy solution for me.
