Race Day Bee Stings?

What is up with bee stings on race day? It happens in Kona, IMCdA, IMC…top level athletes getting stung. Is it the sugar from the gels and sports drink that attracts them? I don’t see any while training but get into a race and they seem to be on course.

Tell me about it! I was stung a total of about 15 times last year in training and 5 times during the bike of IMC…brutal!

maybe less clothing coverage than usual in races as compared to normal training? I got 6 in IMC last time I did it (one right on the nipple - ouch!!), now I get a bit of a reaction to them - and they never use to worry me…

I’ve had bees fly into my helmet vents on training rides - very freaky, but no stings yet…

I got stung around 15-20 times (mostly on the head/scalp that’s why I don’t know the exact count) during the run at a sprint triathlon a couple of years ago. Many of them got stuck in my braids. I don’t know if they were bees or wasps. I have been stung in 4 other races as well. I get stung a lot on bike rides and runs. My reactions to the stings keep getting worse. I don’t know if it is something about me of if I am just unlucky or maybe a little of both.

i had a bee fly into my helmet and start stinging me while flying down the donner summit during the Donner lake triathlon. Literally almost flew off the side of the mountain. scary
