Race choice question, is this a stupid idea?

ok, delima here

i am 6 weeks out from my last A race, plan was to race something this coming weekend (goal race is the 29th of sept, HIM, race this coming weekend is the 22nd or 23rd depending)

options are:

sprint on sat

sprint on sat and sun

HIM on sun.

i move/start a new job on mon 24th (coaching, so i can be flattened for it), so i will prob miss a bit of training there anyway, so recovery for hte HIM would not mess things up too much at the start of the week.

i am coming off about 4 1/2-5 week build right now, training is going very well.

would doing the half in there throw everything off too much, or is it far enough out to not really be an issue?

thoughts? not really set on any of them right now.

thanks!

anyone?

I’d imagine a month between HIM’s is plenty of recovery. Take an easy week after, two weeks + weeks back on, and a little taper in to the next HIM. I think back to back stuff can be fun too. In Philly they do the sprint on Saturday and Olympic on Sunday. Back to back sprints might be fun. Back to back speed events over one endurance one.

Isnt your new job gonna be as a coach?

I don’t see any damage that can be done in a sprint. Have fun, clean up, test out your race day setup.

haha yes coaching for Notre dame.

i am not worried about doing the sprint, or really both of them.

i am more wondering outloud if doing the HIM now is going to cut too much into training time for the later one, or if it wont really matter assuming i recover well.

depends on what your needs are right now, if you have a strong endurance base and your nutrition strategy is already dialed in, then I would say not much benefit to doing the earlier half and a good fast sprint may wake things up a little to let you have a faster A half iron in Spet. If you have been racing short and fast all summer, then the half might be good on the endurance and nutrition side. The only caution to the half would be if you go really, really hard and are in the 40+ age range, it can take a bit of time to recover from the effort 1 week of real recovery easy workouts and then another week or so for your run legs to fully come back.

i’m deff coming from the short course side of things.

last few sprints so far this season i have been 1st overall.

training over the last two months has shifted towards the half in sept.

i’m trying to decide right now if i want the sprints as just two more fast races and possible overall places, or its time to start worrying about the half a bit more and start racing/focusing on it.

fwiw i’m 23, training a pretty solid amount and feel race wise ready to hit either one.
my one concern is i spent the summer training in CO and am deff not used to racing in the humidity/heat we have going on in ohio right now.
but that could be addressed through either set of races…

sounds to me like you could easily go either way, personally I would race the half focusing on pacing and nutrition to dial it in for the A race
