R.i.p. r.e.m

The 80s Athens scene never gets the respect it deserves. R.E.M., The B-52s, Fine Fresh Fellows, Steel Pole Bathtub all from an amazing time.

You know me brother. I get weird about my bands. I agree with you about U-2. I couldn’t hang around much after Pop. Still would love to see them live again.

Without question the most overrated rock band of all time.

Amen to that Brother Tibbs. I saw REM 4 times, and each time got a little less appealing. The best was in 1985 at Memorial Coliseum at UK and 10,000 Maniacs opened for them. That was when Stipe was allegedly banging Natalie Merchant. She was so drunk/high, she fell off the stage and they were basically laughed off their set. REM came out and made up for it though.

A couple years ago B-52s played a Derby Eve show on the Great Lawn here (basically where transition area is for IM Lou) and I could not believe how well their music translated live. Just one of the best shows I have seen in a long time.

No, that would be either the Grateful Dead or Bruce Springsteen.

My mind is a tree and your like the cookie elves.

REM sucks donkey balls, good riddance.

“Without question the most overrated rock band of all time.”

Let’s see if I can top that. Nickelback, Marilyn Manson, Jay Z, Lady Gaga, Justin Beeber, Fall Out Boy, Eric Frampton, Maroon 5, Madonna, Bon Jovi. I could keep going but if you don’t get the point that’s very sad.

Now if we can just get something done about U2.

I like R.E.M.
This morning, my wife told me they were breaking up, 20 seconds later, NPR confirmed it. For some reason it made me sad, though I haven’t bought an album of theirs since the early CD period. I think I have several newer ones in iTunes that I somehow acquired over the years, but rarely listen to it. Automatic for the People was awesome. Reminds me of high school dances.

As I read on Twitter: When REM breaks up who do they listen to?

In 1981, I met them as we (a band I was in) were loading out as they were loading in: Stipe still had hair!
Over the next few years, I’d see 'em and exchange “nods,” but I can’t really say I knew them.

I wish I had even one tenth of their success.

“Boxcars are turning, out of town.”

You can’t top that. REM is the most overrated band of all time. They came along at a time when college kids were STARVING for something, ANYTHING to rescue them from hair metal, classic rock, and Prince.

I am “the perfect age” to be an REM fan, graduated HS in 87, off to college.

They stunk then and they stink now. Most of us knew Tibbs…

…most of us.

Pasty-ass frat-boy rock.

If REM were today they would be Daughtry.

All you have to do to learn everything about REM is listen to one ((((shudder))) Hootie and the Blowfish song, and squint your eyes. That is all the REM you need to know right there.

Yuck.

hey darius has moved to country and done real well. That’s where all the real musicans are now.

Good lord I’m sitting here looking at REM live clips just to reinforce what I knew 20 years ago. Man they suck.

There is no accounting for taste, except when YOU have zero. Murmur and Reckoning were groundbreaking.

Hilarious. Someone needs to remind me that the ground broke back when I was paying attention to music back then.

puh-LEASE.

**De gustibus non est disputandum *****- ***next time, say that.

Agreed. I’d also throw “Fables…” and “Life’s Rich…” in there. I always thought it was b/c I live in Germany from 84-86 that I thought the same (think cheesy Euro-disco), but I currently work out at the campus gym where they listen to 80s on Sirrus and I cringe. I’m thinking about getting a time slot on the college radio station to play 80s music that didn’t suck. Early (pre-“Document”) REM would be there.

Yet, they live the lives of rock stars and you…well post on an off topic tri site.

Hmmm…

Play “Talk About the Passion” and people will be lining up.
